GX550 fuel tank in a Land Cruiser

Very curious with this molded void is for. Would you have any ideawhat is that to clear?
It had no apparent function, there was anything inside the tank and nothing outside the tank (protruding from the vehicle).

For anyone interested, the large round opening, just above the white connectors, is the rear seat area. You can see the seat bracket up through the hole (after unbolting, it was just laying in the floorboard)

Darn, I suppose they molded that in just to reduce the capacity and therefore weight of the tank.

I’m sure it’s a warranty violation but see my video above on potentially removing that, welding in a patch and gaining a pint or two of fuel capacity. Probably not worth the effort….

There seem to be some additional molded in voids on the bottom of the LC tank that the GX tank lacks. Again I can’t see any reason they’re there while I’m under my truck beyond a deliberate attempt to reduce the capacity of the tank and therefore weight.

Is the GX tank approximately the same depth or height as the LC tank?

That’s an extremely helpful photo! I’m not seeing any components related to hybrid system above the tank.

I believe a number of people have claimed the GX 550 tank would not fit due to clearance issues with unspecified components related to the hybrid system.

Also, some claimed an incompatible fuel pump systemthat is hybrid only.

Would be curious if your experiment encountered either issue?

Sorry for all the questions! Really appreciate your efforts!
Those people don't know what they're talking about........... How would they know if the tank wouldn't fit unless they tried? If they tried, they would have posted about it somewhere. The only interference was the 4-link mount (which was molded into/clearanced for the LC tank).

The fuel pump is the same part number, so there's that. The fuel pump was mounted and secured re-using the LC locking ring and gasket and all hoses/connectors snapped right into place. One of the hoses was form fitted to the LC contours, but was a comfortable fit on the GX tank, not perfect but would work without any issues (visible on the R/H pic on my earlier post).

It voids the fuel tank warranty but nothing else. The two tanks are about the same size lengthwise and the same, at the deepest (top to bottom) point. The skid plate brackets are exactly the same height (top to bottom) The GX tank is bulkier where the LC tank has many swooping surfaces.

Well, that’s the end of those arguments! Hats off to you, sir!

Excellent info on confirming the overall height/depth being substantially the same.

Yep, it’s those “swooping surfaces” I’m referring to you as molded in voids that seem to be there only to reduce capacity and not clear other components.

EOD Guy- my hat is off to you sir. Valiant effort and after all of the posts I've read on this- no one predicted the linkage issue.
Seriously- hoping #Toyota and Long Range America have been following this thread to know this is a real problem and folks are looking for a solution. ...maybe the international tanks will provide some hope.

I'm thinking, if I can make a wooden buck for the inside and brace it solid, then a forming buck for the outside......... ratchet strap and slow application of a heat gun, I may be able to mold the pocket without breaching the plastic. The only area I'm concerned about is the seam (where the top and bottom are welded together).
There are companies that do ‘rotational molding’ that may be able to help you make something work. It’s a fascinating technology.

It would have been great if they had 3D scanned the underside of the LC with the gas tank removed. Would have made it possible to virtually test fit possible gas tank replacements without incurring the time and expense of an IRL experiment... Plus the 3D scan maybe could have been gifted to third party gas tank specialist companies to jump start their development
Now you're cooking with gas 🔥

Looks like I tried the wrong tank......LOL
I wonder if the fuel pumps would be compatible though? I think diesel fuel pumps are different, and current gasoline fuel pump may not fit.

Asking a huge favor.......... could you please call you UK dealer and see if you can get the part number for the UK spec tank.
Definitely need to start a sticky listing part numbers of every single tank made for this platform.

I believe there are at least 7 different fuel tanks out so far for this platform.

- LC 250 North American spec 17.9 Gallon petrol main

- Prado 250 UAE 29 gallon petrol main

- Prado 250 UK 21.1 gallon diesel main

-Prado 250 Australia -21.1 gallon diesel main

-Prado 250 Australia 8 gallon diesel sub

-Lexus GX550 21.1 Gallon petrol main

-Lexus Gx550h 17.9 gallon petrol main

Thanks for sharing!
If someone would offer as an upgrade it would sell like crazy. Agile Off road does this in the sprinter van world and it’s in very high demand. Only a matter of time.
