GX550 fuel tank in a Land Cruiser

Update:

Eric Sargeant's Facility and Crew is top notch. John Millis went the distance to try and make the best of my situation, nothing but professionalism, the Master Tech who performed the work was Top Level as well.

A 13 hour drive and a boatload of money spent, sadly it was a VERY expensive failure. A GX 550 fuel tank will not fit into the space available in the LC. The rear of the LC tank has a space in the rear of the tank to allow the suspension links to clear and I don't think the GX has the same type rear suspension.......... so it came up about 2" too long. All the fittings were correct and the LC plastic vent clamp had to be removed (the GX tank has it molded in). Unfortunately the old fuel pump sending unit was installed in the new tank before the tank was test fitted, allowing a small amount of fuel inside the new tank. The parts department would not accept it back due to the fuel.......... so I am the proud owner of a brand new never used GX550 fuel tank...........

All may not be lost as I am going to attempt to mold a pocket (R/H pic) into the tank otherwise, it's kind of useless.

Your efforts are worthy and greatly appreciated. Frustrating too, but as they say-- Rome wasn't built in a day--I'm betting you'll find a solution :)

Wonder if it would be too noticeable to strap it to the roof rack and run a hose into the filler neck..... hmmmmmmmm

Definitely going to be a warmer weather project.

Thanks for attempting it, we were all rooting for this to work.

It would have been great if they had 3D scanned the underside of the LC with the gas tank removed. Would have made it possible to virtually test fit possible gas tank replacements without incurring the time and expense of an IRL experiment... Plus the 3D scan maybe could have been gifted to third party gas tank specialist companies to jump start their development

There are a lot of pockets of inconsistency between the two tanks. What does the other side of the tanks look like? It might come down to fabricating a new deeper "bottom" for the tank. If none of the other Land Cruiser tanks don't work.

Great effort and good thought on molding in a pocket to give adequate clearance. Fire up the heat gun. Again, thanks for the effort!

The tanks are indeed different shapes, but the only "non-fit" area was what I out lined, otherwise it looked like it was going to fit, just needed to be slid back a bit to get the tank straps to line up.

Very curious with this molded void is for. Is that to clear a mounting bracket or something?

I'm thinking, if I can make a wooden buck for the inside and brace it solid, then a forming buck for the outside......... ratchet strap and slow application of a heat gun, I may be able to mold the pocket without breaching the plastic. The only area I'm concerned about is the seam (where the top and bottom are welded together).

I believe a number of people have claimed the GX 550 tank would not fit due to clearance issues with unspecified components related to the hybrid system.

Also, some claimed an incompatible fuel pump systemthat is hybrid only.

Would be curious if your experiment encountered either issue?

Sorry for all the questions! Really appreciate your efforts!

That sounds like an excellent plan. I bet it will work if you just take it slow. However, even if it splits, I would bet the tank is HD PE. I’ve had to repair more than a few canoes using the method below. It’s pretty easy and you don’t have to make it as pretty as this guy did.
