Upcoming tariffs on vehicles made outside the US

My LC was my 50th birthday present to myself that I got 2 years early in 2024. The car itself already told me I made the right choice not to wait. But this? Gravy

I initially started seriously looking at Land Cruisers when the 1958s were being discounted 5k+, and threat of the tariffs was what really solidified my decision to buy one last month. It's a bit of a hedge against that happening.

Long lasting tariffs would wreak havoc on the market. Even made in USA vehicles would be driven up in price because all demand would go towards them. Same goes for the used market, so having a vehicle you love right now is a good spot to be in.

Insurance payouts are based on the current market price to replace the vehicle, so it doesn't matter what you initially paid. We had a 2009 FJ Cruiser totaled in 2023 and got a $25,000 insurance payout for it.
Insurance will also likely increase on any cars made outside the US.

Not trying to start a political debate, more of an FYI. Saw today that 25% tariffs were announced for any vehicle made outside of the United States, slated to take effect on April 2 and collections slated to start on April 3. It will be interesting to see how much of the tariff Toyota absorbs vs how much is passed on to the customer, if you are in the market might not be a bad time to grab one in the next week if you find what you like.
Your non-political post brought out the trolls.

I wonder if this will impact part imports for us out here ordering shit from Japan.
I just received a set of wheels from Japan and was going to put in another order for something else and no way that's getting here before April 2.
The dates line up with an April fools joke.

I expect there to be exemptions, kind of throws Japan for a spin after they announced a billion dollar investment in usa. They might just be forced to assemble cars here.

People really need to do some homework before freaking out. I get the whole "orange man bad" mentality but this was proposed, not implemented. Even if it does get implemented the 25% is charged to what the vehicle cost toyota, not you. So our price will not go up 25%. Worst thing I see happening is dealers try to monopolize on the fear generated by the "orange man bad" crowd.

Manufacturers simply are not going to eat the 25% increase in cost, it will ultimately get passed on to the consumer no matter what the product is.

While I don’t think this tariff silliness is going to last long, the immediate effect on the LC market is that US Toyota dealers are likely not going to order much inventory in the short-term from Japan if it means they will have to try to sell a vehicle at $ 80,000 that is currently selling for $ 64,000 …. not a lot of serious car buyers would jump at that deal.

In the meantime I’d think many dealers might see no reason to continue to offer discounts on LC’s currently on their lots if they believe the 25% tariffs might last a while.

This proposal doesn't necessarily punish foreign cars. Many foreign car manufactures produce in the US and will not be affected. Toyota has 10 or 11 US plants. Unfortunately, for Land Cruiser, Toyota does not build these in the US. Hopefully, Toyota changes this soon. There have been several recent announcements from the likes of Honda, Hyundai, etc of bringing production back to the US. What's ironic is that the left-leaning unions have already fully embraced this proposal by a conservative president. With that said, I'm skeptical this will ever go into law at the proposed rates.

My incoming LC is still on the boat and won't arrive in port until after April 2. Could my deal be affected by this?
If it actually happens, Yes, you will have to cover the difference in price which the dealership will definitely let you know about.
