Gas tank - distance inaccuracy

Toyota keeps a fuel reserve with all their hybrids, if you were to run them completely empty it would damage the system and need to be replaced.

Pretty sure it has to do with keeping the in tank fuel pump cool............. there is no difference between it running out of gas and the engine shutting off..... either way the engine isn't running and unable to charge the battery, however a fuel pump running and no gas around it or through it to keep it cool, it wouldn't last very long.

Here is what I know . I put 17 gallon in my FE . The light was on low fuel , it was reading empty on gauge and remaining mileage was 16 miles .
I fill the same way every time . If it has a 18 gallon tank as advertised ,
I would say trust your remaining miles or have some good shoes for walking handy.
I will say my 2022 tundra hybrid when got to empty it still had 4-5 gallons . Not the LC

I don't get it how the 2 gallons are calculated?
I don't think it is a calculation......... IMO it's got to do with how far the fuel pump pickup screen is from the bottom of the fuel tank when it was installed by the manufacturer during assembly. as an example (IDK) it's specified to be 1/4" from the bottom of the tank and for what ever reason it was set 1/2" from the bottom, that extra 1/4" would be a lot of unusable fuel.

Today my warning light for fuel didnโ€™t come on until the gauge stated 17 - I filled up when range said 8 miles- I filled to the brim it took 17.7 gallons- something clearly doesnโ€™t add up

Interesting inaccuracies. All over the place, too. I ran mine to 0 and drove 8 miles more. Here's my fuel up details, and I do use the wait-30-sec-then-pump-again method to make sure I gas all the way.

By my math that's about 35 plus the 8 I drove on E. So 43 miles left after it indicated 0 miles, which is strangely consistent with my 2 BMWs, C-class and current gen BRZ. Consistently between 40-50 miles after E. Yes, I do this to every new vehicle to find out.

I am sorry I didn't understand your math. I got that you drove another 8 miles after it said 0 miles left, but where does the 35 miles come from? That's a lot of miles. Per the previous post by Bruce, when the gauge says 17 miles and he added 17.7 gallons, I assume there is at most 1 gallon left after the warning light comes on. Which means, you can only drive 20 miles at most after that. (20 mpg)

Warning light didnโ€™t come on until range said 17 miles- reserve supposed to be 2.7 gallons - approximately 54 miles - clearly something amiss

(17.9-16.165) * 20.17 = 34.99. This is what I fuelled up. But since I already drove 8 miles after the mile countdown said 0, there was ~43 miles left in the tank when it initially said the tank was empty.

The question is, does the tank really hold 17.9 gallon or not. Nobody has evidence of that. However, we do know now even if the mile countdown said 0, we can still drive at least 8 miles. Thank you for your risky experiment. ;) This is kind of important since this tank is small and mpg is low at the same time.
