Tire Upgrade ?

new member here, got a 1958 last month and recently got tires put on. Nitto Ridge Grapplers, 285/70/18, stock 18" wheels

no trimming needed. mudflaps were removed so they dont get caught on stuff

love the stock look - once lifted, will probably throw 35's on those rims

This set up looks amazing…How much space do you have to the upper control arm in the front, seems like those tires would give you a half-inch space on the inside?

Thanks! I didn't take any photos of the stock setup... but clearance wasn't an issue, zero rubbing

Has anyone measured the speedometer with factory 265s? I am trying to upgrade tires but keep my speedo and MPG reasonably accurate. I thought 275 was the largest I would go until I tested the speedo compared to google maps and an additional app speed reading. Seems that with OEM tires going about 58 MPH when speedometer says 60. If this is true, it would be most accurate with 285/70/18 tires. One day I will find a friendly cop with a speed gun to confirm this

Make sure his radar gun is calibrated properly.

My bet is that a good GPS will be very accurate..
 
I've been lurking for some time on this thread, obsessing about tires. For now, I want to keep MPG up and maintain the stock wheels, suspension, and ride, but with a more aggressive tire. I also wanted the largest tire that would fit without any mods, and that would fit in the current spare tire location. Yesterday, I had Discount Tire mount General Grabber AT/X 275/70R18 116S and am very pleased with the results. I notice very little difference in the ride, perhaps a bit more firm (which I think is good), and about the same road noise as stock (I have active noise cancellation and fake engine noise turned off). These tires are only 7 lbs heavier than the OEM tires. I also gained about 3/4" of clearance.

Did you see much loss at all MPG wise? The look is great and the weight is close so I figure the loss may be negligible hopefully. I always try to find close to stock weight AT tires. The LTs are just too heavy and you feel it daily driving plus the mileage hit. I tried some LTs on my GX460 and swapped the next day to Toyo AT SL stock size. Your pics look great, these appear to be a great option for slightly larger tires.

Just wanted to max out rubber and still be able to fit underside carrier for the spare. Both sets are 116 load class so much better ride and fuel economy than an E rated tire. The Generals not as responsive as the Coopers and feel like a firmer ride but road noise low and about the same with both. I did have the Generals on my Taco and have been very happy with them in the past.

looks good.. is this leveled or stock ? I have the same tires size coming and between leveling it or not ?
 
No levelling, no lift, no rubbing even at full compression/articulation. Verified throughout posts with this combo and fits the spare tire location.
 
With a debt of gratitude to the insights from this forum - and @Markarian421 in particular for putting together his spreadsheet - I finally settled on 275/70/18 KO2s mounted on Method 316s with +18mm offset in Titanium Grey. I did the spare too, and as you can see from the rear photo, it fits, but droops about 1-2” below stock. Can’t wait to get them off-road and get them dirty.

So far, after about 500 miles, I’m averaging about 18.7 mpg (about 20.7 on a recent road trip). Ride with the E-rated tires is only noticeably stiffer over potholes at speed. Road noise was noticeable if you were listening for it above 70mph, but not intrusive.

The Nitto Terra Grappler G3 at 275/70/18 seems like an excellent choice based on size, SL rating, weight, performance, etc.
I am new to the all-terrain tire world. What is the overall perception of Nitto and the Terra Grappler specifically ? Most of the reviews are puff pieces at this point.
