Climate Control Questions

I have the same problem. I received my LandCruiser in October. within 15 days I was at the Service center just to have a "Technician tell me that I was mistaken and that everything was fine. He actually took a ride with me and I set the temperature to 68 degrees with the AC on and closed all the windows. Drove for 10 minutes and the guy was sweating. even after that he said that everything is fine and that there are no codes in the system. the temperature inside the car reached 91 degrees and the guy still said that it was fine.
Find another dealer…

I am in Dallas, drive in normal mode and when I left for work in the morning it was around 32 degrees outside. I remote start my car from the app and the AC is already pre-set to 75 degrees. When I get in the car, its feels nice and comfortable but once I start driving, its starts getting really hot inside to the point of being very uncomfortable. I put the temperature down to 70, than 65, 62, and 61 but even at 61 it blows hot air. I put it down to LO (60 degrees) and it starts blowing cold air and gets really cold. I put it up to 62 from 60 and it starts blowing hot air, making me very uncomfortable. It seems like there is no middle ground here. It's either I am setting it on 61/62 degrees and dealing with hot air blowing at me or 60 degrees with cold air blowing at me. Very frustrated with the HVAC system in this car.
This morning was 27*f and i tried no jacket and turned the "rear" on auto. This was significantly better than with the rear off, i kept the thermostat at 61 for whole commute. I did not try with hvac all off because i was comfortable, and honestly not sure how to do it without grabbing the manual. Toyota hvac is definitely a steep learning curve for me coming from an Audi; you buy it, set the temp to 68, and never touch it again for 9 years. Audi's hvac system and creature comforts are leaps and bounds better than toyota's -but of course audi can't do real offroading and isn't a fun vehicle like landcruiser is.

I agree! Owning A4 and Q7 in the past myself, I never had issues with the AC. Same with my wife's 2013 Camry and now 2022 Acura MDX, set it at 68 year round never touch it again. I am not sure why Toyota made this more complicated than it needs to be.

My dealer is ghosting me. Still no fix. Mine was working just fine until about 3600 miles, and then it just turned into a hairdryer out of nowhere. The only environmental change i can map back to was that it was fall and starting to get cooler out. Any after market AC swaps out there? 🍿

"I know I'm sweating my bag off, but there are no error codes, so all is fine".

It has been below freezing in New England for several weeks and I’ve been having the hot air problem consistently. Automatic seems to control the temperature fine (68) but if I change it to manual fan mode, it blows nothing but very hot air until about 62 or 63° which point it turns into lukewarm and then cool at 61 and low.

Today was 30° in the morning but got up to 45°. In the morning I had the hot air problem, and in the afternoon it stopped and began behaving normally. I’m assuming there must be a sensor that takes into account the outside air then modifies the temperature of of the air coming into the cabin.

When external temperature was 45°, the inflection point where went from really hot air to lukewarm and cool was about 68° or so which is where I would expect.

It just seems so strange that you cannot adjust the temperature of the air manually when it’s below freezing outside. It’s gotta be some code error or something.

Any fixes yet?

Hey Folks,

I tried searching for this, but nothing cropped up.

I've noticed that my LC LC Climate Control is not working as I expected. I have had a few other cars with "Automatic" settings for temperature, so it's not all new territory.

In hot weather, it seems like the AC isn't effective at getting the temperature down. My previous cars with "Auto" settings were both two-seaters, so maybe it's just that a full-size vehicle has a more difficult challenge... or maybe it's because I have the truck set in Eco drive mode and it's saving gas by not working hard... or?

And, now that it's colder here, I'm finding that there's a different problem. There's no trouble keeping it warm, but the vent air is always too warm. So, even the cabin is generally comfortable I feel like have a weak hairdryer blowing at me, even when I lower the setting to 68.

In my other vehicles the temperature of the air from the vents kinda matches my desired cabin temp and I am wondering if there's something I could change about my settings to address these. Or maybe I need to get something fixed....

Is anyone else having similar issues?

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks!

C
I had the same exact problem today. Driving in "ECO" mode in cold weather (below freezing temperatures) my wife cranked up the heat. But after driving a while we got hot and tried to lower the temperature. However, the air coming out of the vent was very warm/hot even when we adjusted the temperature to low 60's. Had to lower temp to "LO" to finally get some cool air to blow.

It is just the way the car is designed. Everyone here needs to do their part and schedule a service appointment with a dealer to register the complaint. that is the only way Toyota will decide to do anything about it. if they see enough of these complaints coming in they might issue a fix or recall of some sort for the compressor sensors or some other part. similar to how the tundra engine recall came about because of enough complaints.

If this were a GM, ford or Euro car, I would say its a waste of time because they would never issue a recall but Toyota is pretty good at taking action on an accumulated number of complaints.

Really I think it can be fixed with only a software update because the ECU is telling the compressor what to send out.

I just registered the complaint with corporate as well: Toyota Brand Engagement Center - 800-331-4331
I told them the AC is either all the way hot or all the way cold. She said if they get enough complaints about this issue from that call center, the engineers will look at it.
They already fixed an issue on some LC's where the remote start couldn't set climate controls via this complaint method. this one was fixed via an update so hopefully we can get that too.
I urge everyone to do this it only takes 5-10 minutes over the phone.
they will ask if you have seen a dealer for it already. I just said the dealer stated there are no error codes the car is throwing off so there was nothing they could do.

Maybe someone who is more familiar with the design can weigh in but after a little digging the only mention of a cabin air temperature sensor I can find is associated with the air intake grill in the way back on the passenger side, nothing up front under the dash. Not claiming to be an expert and this is solely from doing a part search on various websites but if the is the case it might explain the seeming lack of responsiveness, particularly for riders up front, if the air temp for passengers needs to equalize with the cargo area, especially if you have a lot stuff in the back. I can attest that when the dog is back there I can smell his breath when he is panting into the intake vent :-(

I took my LC into the dealer yesterday and expected to be turned away after they did some diagnosis just to get my complaint in the books. I had the tech sit in my passenger seat and showed him the temperature readings with a thermometer and it was either 50 degrees on low or 130 degrees on any other temp (60+). He said that is 100% not right without a doubt. They ended up keeping my LC overnight doing more diagnostics. Called me today and said that they compared it to other LC's they have on the lot and they do not have this issue. They are probably going to keep it over the weekend. they said they opened a case with Toyota HQ and are waiting for a call back to go over the issue.
I will keep yall updated as more details come.
