Brakes Squeal

Mine squeaks occasionally, but my neighbor's Audi does it every single day. when backing out of their driveway,. If you're outside at the time, it's hard to ignore. I really hope the LC never develops a problem that bad.

Mine too. The squeal we hear results from the stick-slip phenomenon between our brand-new rotors, pads, pad size, and friction material combination. The vibrations caused by the sticking and slipping of the brake material are repeated and amplified when they reach the natural frequency of the rotors, creating that annoying squeal. It's the same concept as the sounds produced by a violin or when you rub your finger along the rim of a wine glass. Rust and water can influence the intensity of the squeal. Unfortunately, I don't think there's not much we can do about it except wait for the rotors to wear down or, if it's too annoying, consider swapping out the pads.

I would like to believe this but after 6000+ miles mine still squeaks like a New York sewer. This is after multiple "bedding in" attempts, which although fun, do not remedy the problem for long.
Mine still squeak occasionally in reverse. I'm over 6000 as well. It didn't start until I was between 4000-5000.

Me too. Started at 4000. I’m going in for the 5000 service and will add it too the list.

Does anyone else exerience brakes squeel in reverse? Mine seems to do it mostly after it has sat for a while. I only notice it in reverse.
Mine do. Not everyday but after sitting a day or two in the garage on Mondays it always squeak. I have only had my LC for about 4 months.

Mine has been doing this since new, and I am at 6K miles. It seems to have gotten worse over time. I brought it in for service initially and the dealership dismissed it and called the noise 'normal' and it happens with moisture/etc. I spoke to the service manager and insisted this is not normal and sent them the video below. They took my vehicle for a day and were able to recreate the issue. The dealership did mention there is a service bulletin for the GX550 for this issue but nothing for the Land Cruiser yet. They did indicate that one 'would be coming' for the Land Cruiser to address this issue.

It does not happen when going forward, but every time I back out of the garage this happens. It also happens when reversing out of parking spaces, sometimes even after only being parked for 15-30 minutes, so it is not just an overnight/moisture issue. It's unfortunate, it's embarrassing, it should be fixed.

Whoa! That sound is worse than I imagined. Come on, Toyota! WTF?

It's certainly not that loud in the cabin but it must be real bad for the neighbors.

Mine is worse than ever since we got our snow here in Michigan. A few times now I've almost crashed into the neighbors car on the street because I'm trying to avoid braking as much as possible, and then slid down the driveway.

Last night I backed into my driveway instead (not easy) and almost crashed into the tree.

I'm starting to get really mad at the vehicle and Toyota too.

Recommend taking a few minutes and sending these observations/complaints to the Toyota Corp link listed several times in this channel. Corporate responded to me right away, but said there is no TSB or recall…need more people sending this to corporate, pretty sure the dealers are not sending these complaints in. I’m not one to bitch about this vehicle because I love it, but this break noise is seriously unsat!

Thanks Joe Dirt - I actually created a case back in August right after getting my vehicle.

I've had it to the dealer 3 times now without them doing anything about the problem. Last time they kept it for 3 days and just threw up their hands.

I just picked my LC250 up from service, and the service advisor told me hotspots were found on all 4 rotors and all 4 rotors were de-glazed.

This doesn’t seem like it will address the cause of the hotspots, but waiting to see if the brake screech is gone

I have 3700 mi on my LC. The squeal has been getting worse which may be related to the colder temps (25F approx). I brought it to my dealership yesterday. They were well aware of the problem. I also recorded a video showing the brake squeal. The service rep was not to optimistic about a fix. I reminded him how much I paid for the vehicle.

After about an hour the rep told me that the mechanic was able to duplicate the squeal. The mechanic lubed the brakes, drove it again and no squeal. See invoice.

Backed down the driveway this morning (temp 16F) and had no squeal. We’ll give it time and see if this is the long term fix. Lube and shims on the back of the brake pads have been used for years to address squeal.

My wife’s FE has the front brake squeal daily on first trip backing down the driveway (now at 10,000 miles). I have a GX550 Overtrail which was doing the same, Lexus issued a TSB and yesterday at my 5000 miles service they installed new rotors and pads and no noise this morning.

Good to hear, KMO. Hope it stays fixed for you.

Brake noise is gone for me after de-glazing the rotors.
