Waiting on an answer from Toyota about a bad pressure control solenoid

This was me/my post and experience Transmission issues - hard fall in and out of gears

I just heard from the dealership today actually. They have had my vehicle for 3 wks now with no answers. The last i heard was they were waiting for some oil test kit from Toyota canada. I guess that was completed annnnnnnnnddddddd……… It turns out I need a new transmission (as expected) To my absolute shock and dismay… it’s on order and will arrive on this coming monday apparently. Thats left to be seen considering there was nothing in stock a week and a half ago… so fingers crossed I have my girl back by the end of next week once the swap out takes place.
I’m know the ugggg in your stomach you are feeling. It’s mind blowingly frustrating and disappointing. All I can think is I am glad we are getting this fix now and out of the way before our warranty is up… and the mad rush of new LC owners who are going to experience this floods the dealerships. A rough way to experience a brand new vehicle but I genuinely hope this will address the problem for good.

I just heard from the dealership today actually. They have had my vehicle for 3 wks now with no real answers. They showed me the metal glitter bomb in the bottom of my transmission pan delicately and beautifully dispersed in my transmission fluid lol

That sucks! Did they provide you any kind of root cause analysis?

Sorry if I missed it what mileage were you at?

No, I have no answers yet as to what has gone wrong. I assume I will get more details once the replacement is completed. They have been quite tight lipped with me. I know my dealership is shocked as they did say they haven’t ever had this issue even with the known Tacoma issue. I had my vehicle for 6wks and was on my way home from a 5000km road trip thru Wa/Or/Ca and back to Alberta. When I dropped it off at the dealership a few wks back it had 5500kms on it (about 3400 miles)

Thank you.. I hope they share more info with you and there are no more issues.

The latest update is that the parts will be shipping in early October.

In somewhat related news, it sounds like the 24 Tacoma also possibly has the same transmission issue. According to that article, some low-milage taco owners report the same issues and Toyota has put out an official Technical Service Bulletin (TSB).

The article listed some of the same codes that they found when diagnosing my Land Cruiser, "Pressure Control Solenoid." With the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, and '25 4-runner all using the same build that might make for a real pain for other owners unless Toyota can start stockpiling the parts here.
It seems Toyota on the Tacoma was saying the transmission problems were debris related and was only certain production runs. The TSB if got a selenoid code got a new transmission. In the Tacoma forums early signs were that the car would stick in one gear. You would come to a stop and you would be in 6th gear all the time :) For those that got the transmission issues early signs seems different engine wouldn't shut off at a stop light? I'm curious if the LC transmission manufacturing lined up with the bad transmission production runs with debris? Are people that had issues the FE models? Or if the Line Pressure Control Assembly is a new problem as has different module than in the Tacoma based on forum here? It seems in general if you are going to have issues will be in the first 5K miles at least will be under warranty?

My LC has about 2,500mi on it to date and I just received it from the dealer in mid-July. Last week I drove it from Eastern WA to the west side for my quarterly in-office visit which ended up being about (850-900mi round trip) with a major malfunction. Now it's currently at my local dealer and the local tech just called me to say found the stored codes and tracked them to issue with a faulty Pressure Control Solenoid. He's still waiting to speak with Toyota to see how they'd like to proceed and that he will call me back later this afternoon. I'll share more details below.

I made my 320mi drive on Saturday when I got nearly home and decided to pull through my local taqueria. I pulled up to the window for my dinner when I noticed that the engine didn't shut off like it usually does sometimes at a complete stop. I didn't think much of it, plopped my tacos on the passenger side and pulled out of the parking lot. As I enter the road and press the accelerator, the engine revs like it's in neutral. I look down to see that the shifter is in neutral and at that same moment I hear and feel a big thunk like I was just rear-ended. After a quick check in my mirrors to make sure I'm not causing an accident the dash starts to light up with orange lights and warnings including Drive-Start Control Malfunction, PKSB System Malfunction, Hybrid System Malfunction, DRCC & PCS system malfunction screens along with orange indicators for the brake system warning, driving assist, DRCC & PCS. (I made sure to grab a video so I could remember what the warnings were in case it shut off)

The media console was also throwing up errors and directing me to call my dealer for service. I called immediately, not expecting to reach anyone at 7:30p on Saturday. Since the Land Cruiser still had power I drove it the 2 miles left until home. The car drove like it was in limp mode and I parked it in my driveway for the rest of the weekend. The next day I wanted to see if it still had all the same errors or if I'd be able to drive it to the dealer, so I started it up and almost all of the errors had disappeared except the one that said Hybrid System Malfunction. I shut it back off and waited until Monday morning. When I started it up that time, there were no error messages so I made it to the dealer when they first opened and left it with them.

They swapped keys with me for a new Highlander and said that my warranty agreement would cover the loaner through the week while they diagnose and work on my rig. I didn't hear anything else yesterday so I called and left a message to inquire about it this morning. A little later this morning I got the call with the solenoid diagnosis at the top. Of course, I'm only partially mechanically inclined so I google 'Land Cruiser Pressure Control Solenoid', and the results sort of line up with my experience. However, I'm not exactly sure how the system works with the hybrid integration in the transmission, and I'm curious what Toyota will say and if it's going to be a replacement of just the solenoid or if they found more damage with the transmission.

This is exactly what happened to me a few weeks ago in every detail. All the error messages went away and the check engine light went off by itself the next day before I got in to the dealer. My dealer checked everything and found no problems. The Land Cruiser has been fine before and since the episode. I'm going to talk with the service manager about your outcome with replacement of the transmission and transfer case. I'd like to know why that was necessary in your case and not in mine. I do want to end up with a reliable vehicle for back country travel.
