Well, this is not the kind of thing you like to see on a brand new car with less than 500 miles. I started my car the other day and as I was shifting into drive, an error message came up.

It said "System Malfunction. Please see dealer."

On top of the message, the icons for PCA and Adaptive Cruise Control came up.

It came up fast and disappeared fast so I couldn't take a picture but I'm about 70% sure these icons came up.

I am taking it in to the dealer next week.

I have read via Google searching that this could be something as simple as the front camera was covered or dirty. There is some dirt/ice/snow around and it's bad/cold weather so it could make sense. I hope dealer will tell me the same thing.

Anyone else have this issue? Should I just assume it's a fluke and forget going to the dealer? I doubt there will be any error codes they can read from something like this, no?

Was it snowing or blowing snow when the error message came up?

Was it snowing or blowing snow when the error message came up?

I can't be sure it wasn't blowing snow since there was some wind, but it definitely was not snowing. I also considered that maybe some ice or snow fell off as I was leaving the parking lot. I had just driven to the Vet and was driving home when it happened so I was in a large parking lot.

I have seen similar errors on other Toyota vehicles if I’ve or snow builds up on the front facing radar unit.

This happened on my Highlander with some light rime icing and road salt scum being thrown up by passing cars. First time in 5 years of similar driving conditions. It reset itself after engine off and restart. Kind of dangerous the way it takes over the gage cluster.

I ended up taking it to the dealer. I was not very happy with their service. I figure it would be an hour at most while they cleared some codes but I sat for 2 hours before they even opened a door. Definitely something I'll bring up the next time I show up. They also unplugged my dash cam which was unexpected but apparently not unusual according to Google searching.

Anyway, they told me it did have an error code stored:

C169D87
Side Camera (Right) Image Signal Missing Message

Apparently there was "debris" covering up the camera on the passenger mirror. Frankly, I didn't even know there was a camera there so I couldn't say whether it was blocked or not but now I know that's somewhere to check. Probably just an errant chunk of snow/ice. They cleaned it up, cleared the code, and all is good.
