Skid plate

Has anyone installed the RCI transfer case skid with the beefier Toyota transmission skid plate? I think it's the only separate transfer case skid in the aftermarket so far.

I'm toying with the idea of running the RCI transfer case skid with the Toyota skids, but it looks like it will need at least a hole drilled through the RCI skid to mount the Toyota transmission plate through it. I called RCI to see if they'd installed it with these and got the generic "it should work cause we design it to run with stock skid plates."

Look at Victory 4X4. They sell engine/Transmission skids that are bolt on with no modifications needed. I'm waiting on my set now.
 
I have a 2025 LC/LC that came with the front skid plate, it says Toyota on it.

Was it an option on your window sticker?
Standard proper (thick, shiny, silvery) front skid plate seems to be 2025-specific change. My 2024 LC/LC came with OEM front skid plate made of thin black steel. 2025 LC builder doesn't provide front skid plate option for LC/LC trim anymore, but it is still an option for 1958 trim. Smells like a recent change, I bet early 2025 builder was still allowing to explicitly add nicer front skid plate:

Look at Victory 4X4. They sell engine/Transmission skids that are bolt on with no modifications needed. I'm waiting on my set now.
I can’t find a transfer case skid on their site. Their transmission skid stops before the transfer case. Maybe they’re developing one?

For those that have the OEM skids, any wish you'd have gone with an aftermarket one? I'm really torn about the price difference between the OEM and the GreenLane or RCI. Also really like the weight savings of aluminum. A full skid package at 50lbs seems like a win for my uses - probably sticks/rocks from a trail being tossed up rather than landing/sliding on something.

I just installed my Toyota OEM Skid Plates. Easy to install and feel heavy duty. The embossing on the plates will make them stronger than a flat piece of sheet metal with some bends. I really appreciated that the design of the Toyota has slots for bolts to hold the plates in place while you install the other bolts.

Tried to install the Toyota rear diff. skid and it did not fit. Confirmed it was correct part # with my parts guy @ dealership. It's also suppose to work for Tacoma. Regardless, hardware was to short to fit around rear axle... no way was it going to work. Returned it. I will say it was not that great of a product because it had a lip on the front that could snag and thus be ripped off. Installer didn't like the look of it either and said, "You are better off without it.". Trusted his opinion since all he does is aftermarket truck mods all day long.....

What part number? It’s different from the Tacoma plate, and tucks under (well, over) the front skid plate.

I weighed mine:

Front Steel Skid Plate: 20.8 lbs
Transmission Skid Plate: 18.2 lbs

Original thin front skid plate: 9.4 lbs
Original plastic transmission cover: 4.2 lbs

New plates - old plates = net of +25.4 if I did the math correctly.


(And off topic, but if anyone wants the weight of the OEM running boards, they're 10.4 lbs each. The Toyota Rock Sliders are 38.8 lbs each).

When I had a Tacoma, knowing the weight of all the additional armor was pretty important for suspension changes, so I'm in the habit of keeping track of all these things...nerdy I suppose.

This is perfect. Makes my decision easy to get the OEM since they aren’t any heavier than aluminum options.
 
I was pleasantly surprised that they seem to be decent quality, reasonably lightweight, and not insanely expensive. Also, easy to install.

They’re not the beefiest bash plates you can buy, but they’re decent for what they are.
I never needed more than the factory plates on my GX470 - which are substantially beefier than what came on the LC250. I feel like these will be just fine and I can same some money.
 
Sooooo, x-mas nonmiracle story time. I have LC LC trim with factory installed combo of front steel plate and plastic-composite nonsense that goes between transmission and front steel skid plate. Having transmission wide open to rocks, stumps and other off-road friends bothered me a bit and I came up with a brilliant idea to buy transmission skid plate PT228-35241 (btw this exact part number is not available to order online, so I had to go to a dealership and order it in person, but when you order it in person they don't offer online discount 🤦‍♂️, luckily I am a great negotiator 🙈 and was able to convince dudes from the parts department to apply the online discount and secured it for $247.50 instead of 341.25-> $93.75 off). Anyway, getting back to the main story ✨ The Installation ✨ Naturally I've downloaded installation instruction way before ordering the skid plate, but I'm too smart to thoroughly read it, so I've skip it to the very last step and assumed that it'd be ezpz installation and the thing will cover only transmission (as its name suggests):

How naive was I. . . In reality transmission skid plate overlaps with plastic-composite skid and under the composite skid plate there is a smaller steel plate that protects stabilizer disconnect mechanism. That was a bit of a surprise 😬 I had to improvise, so I finally read installation instruction (of course not in full 😎 )

and I didn't want to leave the gap between the new skid and factory front steel skid plate, so the decision was to cut the excess of that plastic nonsense:

I was not prepared for the cutting part of this adventure, so I had to use garden cutter and itsy bitsy saw 🫠 I was wrestling with it for like an hour. It is not that hard to break the thing the main challenge was to keep all the mounting points. . . Anyway, here is the final result:

Btw I have oil change approaching, I wish I could see mechanic's face when they discover this art :LOL: I plan to get proper front steel skid plate eventually, so it is supposed to be a temporary solution 🤔
 
Ok, I feel bad because I don't remember who posted this, but somewhere on this forum someone posted a bunch of installation instruction PDFs including this one for the skid plates.
Thanks for posting/re-posting this! Just installed mine today - made it a LOT easier.
