JBL Stereo

I have a 1958 Edition, so my stereo isn't much. Planning on throwing a bunch of money at the stereo in the Spring, though. Every professional stereo shop I've talked to has advised against putting a subwoofer in the hatch. They've more or less explained it as a subwoofer in name alone, so that Toyota can tell people the car comes with a subwoofer. Even for an aftermarket setup, the rear hatch has too many compromises to make it worth it.

The 14-speaker JBL system just wasn’t cutting it for me—it lacked fullness, and the frequencies felt off, muddy, and not harmonious. I’m not a fan of bass that’s all about the unnecessary “boom boom boom.” I prefer bass that complements the music and stays in sync with it. Thankfully, the Beat Sonic amp solved that issue for me, bringing the sound to life in a much more balanced way. Having it in the glove compartment for quick adjustments is a bonus—I can easily tweak the gains whenever I need to, and I’m really happy with the result.

That’s just my take, though, after hearing some solid sound systems. If you’re happy with the OEM sound, then stick with it! But if you’ve ever listened to a truly refined audio system (and I’m not talking about the ones blasting crazy bass down the street), you might find the stock system underwhelming, just like I did.
How did you access the wiring from the glove box? Did you still have to open up the dash one time?

I didn't open it up I just used a fishing wire and pulled it though. Was easy for me. But then again I might have been lucky. If you're talking about accessing wires behind dot Head unit then you do have to take that apart. Just be patient.

Can you update us on what you ended up upgrading on the 14 speaker JBL? Thanks!

I’ll do a full write-up when I have the time.

  • Deadened all doors
  • PAC Ampro with SPDIF adapter for clean audio
  • HELIX DSP SIX/Amp
  • Infinity Kappa 693C 6"x9" Components in the front with Infinity Kappa 303S mids in the dash
  • Infinity Kappa 603CF in the rear
  • Replaced the sub with a JL Audio 8W1v3-4
Finding a spot for the amp was challenging. I ended up cutting into the storage compartment behind the rear seat. It costs about $300 to replace the part, so I took the risk, and it worked out.

Hate threads like this. I've been pretty OK with the JBL 14 speaker set up. Blows away the Harmon Kardon in the BMW X5 that I had. And then I see this setup..................................
