Is this rusting normal?

My good friend has owned multiple new Toyota suvs (4Runners) over the last few years. Driving them primarily in Denver with harsh winters. He has never had rusting like this so quickly. It will be rusted through in a year or so at this rate. I figure it’s worth him going into service to ask? FE LC.

I would not be too concerned with the tip of the tailpipe. What about the frame? The rear axle housing?
Agreed. The 5th generation 4Runners had significant rusting/full corrosion of their entire frames--prompting the filing of manufacturing defect lawsuits.
 
That is pretty light surface rust.

Hit it with a red scotchbtite pad and move on with life.

I guess if it’s really bothersome he could try to polish it. Polished metal surfaces actuality present less surface area for oxidation to form.
