HUD Alignment

Your HUD looks a lot clearer than mine, any chance you can take a picture of the windshield manufacturer label on the lower right corner?

Thank you! Interesting that yours is ML14SH and mine is ML14S. I wonder if the “H” denotes that it’s for a HUD (potentially confirming that mine has the wrong windshield)

Mine is ML14S and clear.

Just a thought........ did the dealer use a chemical to detail the dash and there is a residue on the projector? Might be as simple as cleaning it with a denatured alcohol wipe.

I checked and mine doesn’t appear to have any residue on it, might take a stab at cleaning it just in case. I did have a call with a case manager today from Toyota, they are going to do some digging and call me back on Friday to discuss a plan to try and fix the HUD.

Still waiting on a solution from Toyota, I talked to the customer care rep yesterday and she said there is only one model of windshield listed for the Land Cruiser. She thought it was odd that there isn’t a separate part number for models with a HUD so she was going to do more digging.

Update here - after repeated weekly calls with Toyota and them telling me they are still “researching the issue” I finally pressed and told them that they need to replace either the windshield or the HUD, I don't care which. They contacted my local dealer and apparently they have placed an order for a new windshield. Dealer said it would be a few weeks before it comes in, will report back if that corrects my issue.

On this topic, anyone noticed that occasionally the HUD will move its position without any input in the menus? I first noticed this after putting the vehicle up on ramps for an oil change and I thought maybe it tries to re-adjust or re-calibrate itself after sensing a harsh angle of the vehicle. But occasionally as well, without any harsh parking angle it will re-adjust itself to the lowest position (essentially below my angle of viewing) and I solve it by re-adjusting in the menus. Its not a big deal, but I thought I'd check if anyone else had noticed it or maybe I was missing out on a setting or something.

@AndrewTK I've been waiting 6 weeks for a new windshield (a large crack from a highway rock) and have been told by me dealer's parts dept that they may finally have one from Toyota on 10/31. I'm anxious for replacement, but also terrified that they may not be able to get it as perfect as when fresh from the factory (rubber seals and calibration including HUD). When ordering a windshield, they're definitely supposed to choose a special version that includes the HUD... Good luck!

I just heard from the dealer that they expect my windshield 2 weeks from today, making total time from ordering 5 weeks if it shows up on time.

My HUD is slightly out of focus too:

Until Toyota determines an actual process to diagnose and fix this I will just bring it to the attention of the dealer service department for notes.

It does bother me that much, although I have to chuckle that our beloved but totaled 2015 Chevrolet SS had a much better HUD in almost every respect.

I hope the windshield cures the alignment issues on mine but I am tempering my expectations. When troubleshooting with the dealership initially they checked several other models (not LC) on the lot and there wasn’t a single one with a sharp HUD. Not sure if it’s a bad batch of glass or if Toyota just struggles with HUD alignment.

Have you tried changing the brightness setting? I noticed on mine when I went "full bright" the display didn't seem as sharp. Seems like the middle is just bright enough and looked the sharpest (non-fuzzy) to me.

I test drove a Crown Platinum and the HUD in it was worse to be honest.

I think Toyota might just suck at HUD’s.

I have noticed that if my focal point is the road where it should be the HUD is a bit sharper. If I try to focus on the HUD the image tends to not be as sharp.

This is very similar to a red dot sight on a carbine or pistol. Stay target focused and you get a nice crisp red dot, try to focus the dot and it doesn’t present as well because the pre-focused optics the dot is projecting are on a focal plane that is out ahead of you. I have this issue when I don’t shoot dots enough and revert back to front sight focus especially on a pistol.

I have moved mine as low on the windshield as possible, my eyes are always drawn to it and then i notice the alignment issue. My wife drives a Q5 with a HUD and it is perfectly clear in all situations. I have astigmatism so red dots all look like a blur to me unfortunately, I actually assumed that was the problem with the HUD when we test drove the LC.

I too have some astigmatism. Some red dot sights give me a bit of a comet shaped dot, and some are tack sharp. An old Aimpoint Comp M2 or M3 I used in Iraq and still have to this day gives a bit of a coma or comet shape, yet a Aimpoint ACRO P1, and an Aimpoint Comp M5 are both nice and crisp, especially the Comp M5. I have a Trijicon RMR 01 that is also pretty crisp, but the Trijicon MRO gives me a hint of comet effect. There is seemingly no rime or reason that I can explain other than the optical design on some is better for my eyes than others.
