So I still actually can't believe this happened, but this morning I got an alert from the Toyota app on my phone indicating that the back hatch was open. Since no one has driven it since yesterday, I was skeptical. I walked into the garage to discover that the back hatch was indeed open, yet no one touched it. Not manually, not via a keyfob, and not using the app. (I'm the only one with the app installed anyway)

So... ghosts? Either it's a bizarre electrical malfunction, or maybe a software/security hack. Has anyone else seen anything like this?

It's clearly a ghost....yes. I've had that randomly occur on vehicles in the past. You likely inadvertently bumped the hatch button. Keep an eye on it and bring it in if it continues.

Maybe someone opened it and couldn't figure out how to shut again (as happened to my daughter, but she came and asked)

I know the knee-jerk assumption is that it someone opened it by mistake, but honestly that's not the case. (that was my initial assumption too) No one has even been in the garage since yesterday, let alone touched a key fob. Really weird.

You clearly opened it yourself last evening and simply forgot. Did you happen to consume 4 bottles of Wild Turkey over ice last evening?

In all seriousness, likely a unique gremlin. I had that happen on a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland I had around 2012. It was open all day long while I was in the office. I know I didn't bump the button by mistake since I leave the keys in my cars at the office as they are garaged. Never happened again.

I recently had a similar experience. Careful review of my recent activities led me to conclude that i had accidentally "pressed and held" the trunk open button on my key fob by leaning on it. I suppose that being sure to keep the button side facing inwards in my pocket would provide a bit of protection...

^ This. Has happened to me. Easy enough to do if you have something else that can apply direct pressure to it, like the corner of your wallet.

I’ve had my car lock/unlock “itself” this way numerous times. I’d say this is the culprit
