(Rear) Dashcam Wiring

For you guys who installed aftermarket rear dashcam, what is your choice of mounting location and ways to hide wires?

I have never done any work to install rear dashcam. Usually Toyota's car has a rubber covered passage to allow wiring from rear hatch / door to the body, which is the most ideal way to route the wire. But I am not sure how hard it is to route the wire through that way. I am trying to hide all the wires for my installation so I could use some suggestion to know how you manage to get the work done.

Glad this got started because I also can’t figure out where I’m going to actually mount the rear dash cam
 
I got the fitcamx and basically did what Syed117 did here in this thread.

Except I made the install a little tougher for myself by feeding the wire through the rubber wire loom protector for a cleaner look.
 
I had considered that spot (sans digital rear view camera), but prefer a static location and hoping someone had an ingenious idea 🤣
 
I’ll leave this as a cautionary tale for anyone installing directly onto the rear glass: don’t set the cord slack based on the distance of the full open hatch, set the slack based on the open glass portion. You need a few extra inches of cord to open the glass (ask me how I know 🥲)

Otherwise it’s super easy to route the cord back to the front under the trim
 
Placed mine on the right side of the rear view camera then routed the wire through the rubber (was a pain but came out very clean) and hid the wires under the top cover. From there routed wire through the side panels up to the front.

I haven't done my LC, but on my Toyota Venza, I popped off the panels on the hatch and dropped the headliner just enough to fit my hand in. Then I ran the wire through the rubber "tube" along with factory wiring... That was super tight and took quite a while longer than I thought it would, but definitely makes for a clean install. :)
 
Don't install it onto the rear glass. My installer had a pretty clever solution. He put a magnet under the rear headliner onto the aluminum body. Then he glued a magnet onto the rear dash cam. The magnetic attraction is strong enough to go through the headliner.
 
Magnets are an interesting idea. I wonder how they’ll hold up to the jostling off an average off-road trail. Good suggestion!

In my Venza, I installed it on the plastic housing, but I haven't looked at the LC to see how that might work. I do like the magnet idea though...
 
I epoxied a metal plate under the dash center speaker trim piece and mounted a rubber coated magnet to my radar detector mount, holds very well and hasn't toppled over even under some pretty heavy bounces. I have used two magnets in the past, but with the magnet mounted behind the headliner, any metallic particles will stick to the headliner and be very hard to brush off without fuzzing up the headliner...............

The larger Garmin dash cams have been mounted to the windshield with a magnet for years. The one in my FJ has never fallen off the windshield.

Question for everyone -- is there a good place in the back to tap power? I'm going to put a Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3 back there, temporarily powered by a long USB-C cable. What's the nearest good place to get power instead?

The 12v battery

(edit) if you want to power it with a "Key On" only, you can tap into the cigar outlet. I actually tapped into that to power a relay for my "WeBoost" amp that I mounted near the 12v battery.

I've routed the rear camera cable under front A pillar and all the side impact air bags. Then routing to the rear, I used a belt looper to pull the cable through the rubber housing. See photo.
