It seems from many people's picture that their car doesn't come with this patch. I have never seen this on any car so am very curious
It doesn't feel like a film given the thickness. The body also sounds different when I knock it here comparing to area around it. What I am the most curious is why it doesn't come with other First Edition which also have rock slider.
May be a dealer add on. PPF like this comes in many offerings. Typically part of a dealer "protection and convenience package" Usually does not come like this from Toyota. If you look at your purchase documents there may be a line item in there detailing what they put on, since this is dealer specific you wont see other similar vehicles with this option. PPF also comes in varying thickness. This specific PPF is there to prevent the most common dings from stray rocks. 100% not a structural patch of some sort.
I can’t remember the specifics, but when I had the entire body wrapped in PPF on my LCFE, they removed this portion of factory installed PPF. From what I remember it is very thick (10 mil) and would definitely sound a bit different than an uncovered portion of a body panel. When I say 10 mil, I’m not referring to millimeters but rather a unit of measurement equal to one one-thousandth of an inch.
Confirmed, I have PPF in the same spots on my 991.
It might not 'feel' like a film, but it is, as most have noted above. It is not any sort of metal doubler, as you have assumed. It is an option from Toyota.
Mine never even mentioned it. They basically put there for free. That’s why I like about that specific dealership
It was one place of many they added. They also did the hood and entire front bumper mirrors, rock hitting points also tinted windows and they charged me for it. I talked them down from doing the full PPF install but had to settle for half the install on the FE. All the other dealers around here had an upcharge on the FE for market conditions but offered nothing with it. This is the only dealer that had a ton of stuff added for their upcharge.
I was pretty sure that my first edition had this, but you made me go look anyway. What makes you think that it’s not on all the vehicles? It is. It’s on four runners. It’s on land cruisers. It’s even on Chevy pick ups. It is not dealer installed PPF it either comes from the factory that way, or it’s put on the port

It isn't on all vehicles. It isn't even on all LC's, Mine being a prime example. Pretty ubiquitous among dealers as an upcharge you think is part of the optional equipment from the factory.... but it isnt. Most wont negotiate away these dealer add-ons for the $400 "desert package" or "winter conveniece package", but they are installed at the dealer on nearly every vehicle they sell. I always pre-negotiate this away as I often will do an aftermarket ppf where this has to be removed anyway. Some dealers wont negotiate this away, especially as they often add it to every vehicle that goes out for sale on the lot before purchase.
On my allocation it showed as the “Colorado All Weather Prep Package” or some such. I said I didn’t want it and the guy tried to tell me it was a factory installed option on all the cars. “Even the ones sold in Florida?” said I, at which point he conceded the argument.
