Terrible mileage for a Hybrid and Gas Tank is way too small

I was getting the EPA sticker of 27 mpg highway with my 1958 on the stock all-seasons. After adding roof rails and slightly bigger AT2's, I'm now a little north of 22 mpg highway. For a big boxy truck with a LOT of get up and go (465 lbs of Torque), I think the mileage is still pretty decent ... I'm happy with it.

Well.... my milage sux ass for the first 4 months... getting about 16 to 17MPG... Yes, i was only driving about 4 miles one way or 8 miles round trip... all surface streets with stop signs and red lights most of the way. Now... New job with lots of street/hwy driving mix... Now getting close to 21mpg.... so much better!

Anyone else dealing with this...?
Same problem with my 2025 Land Cruiser, I traded in my RAV4 getting over 40 mpg. I am driving like a old lady and are getting 17 to 19 mpg. I am at least glad I held on to my V8 Tundra and did not fall for Toyota MPG on that one.

Yes, it averages around 20mph for a heavy body on frame truck in the shape of a toaster. However it’s a total beast and would not change a thing other than needing a 5gallon bigger tank. Most people really should just be buying the hybrid Highlander if MPGs are the concern.

I'm ok with the mileage (but I was driving a Suburban prior to this truck) but would like have greater range. I will be moving the spare to a swing-out carrier when/if I take the plunge on a new rear bumper then.... wouldn't it be swell to pump a secondary fuel tank in place of the spare? Could probably double the range. When spending 5-6K sounds like a good idea....

Your mileage will not be at its peak until your transmission is warmed up, if you watch the transmission temp, it takes forever to warm up especially in these very cold weeks of January, the oil temp warms up much faster. Anyway if you're doing little 5 to 10 Mile runs around town and that's it, your transmission may never hit efficient operating temp, but if you have a good highway slog ahead of you it will hit that and then when you get back into side roads or the city, you'll hear that battery kicking in a little more often
Welcome to the asylum Virginia-john.

Same concern. I have a 275 mile ride to my house in NH. Now I will have to make a fuel stop. I’ve averaged approx 17-18 mpg driving very gently this winter. I just increase the tire pressure a couple pounds to see if I can improve it a little. I was getting about 19-20 mpg in the summer, so cold weather and winter fuel may be playing a role in this. Let’s see if it improves this spring. I Love the 250. But disappointing mileage. My 6.2 l Tahoe had better mpg. I think Toyota may have exaggerated the mpg.

On my GMC I can set the mpg display as last 50, 200 or 400 miles - what is it on the LC250?
Does the range calculation follow the same logic as the mpg?

I’m asking because some of the posts I see here and Reddit don’t make sense - ie if the mpg are 16 then a full tank range should be 286 miles, 17mpg should be 305 miles etc. Anyone getting 20 mpg should have a range of 360.

I would only get 300-350 out of my 4Runner with full time 4WD and it was fine for trips as that’s 4 hours of driving - if I get 350 out of my LC I’ll be very happy - but to the point I made above - I’m averaging 19.5mpg right now on a full tank so range should be 350 but it’s showing 286.

Others on this site have demonstrated that the Distance displayed is to reserve level not empty. I ran mine down to 10miles remaining and only put 14.7 gallons in to fill up.

You can see MPG as:
  • Current drive average
  • Cumulative average, labeled as "Total Average" but is manually resettable (like a trip odometer)
  • On 1958 models you can specifically see Tank Average (for some reason missing on LC/FE trim)

If you look on the drive info on the multmedia display you can also see the minute by minute MPG history over the last ~20-30min.

I would just like to point out that the specs for the US version of the 300 series land cruiser is now released. It's known at the 2025 Lexus LX700H overtrail. It's average cost is between 115-120K and it only has a 17.9 gallon gas tank with a 3.4L twin turbo hybrid V6. For reference to get a sequoia TRD PRO it costs on average 80-85K and also is a 3.4L twin turbo hybrid V6 but somehow has a 22 gallon tank. I'm more than happy to only pay the 70K for the "not a real land cruiser" instead of that kind of coin. This is just my .02 on the LX700H but that tank size is even worse of a situation that our LC250 series has with it's tank size. Also in that Earth color with the full black interior it looks really nice. Cheers to whoever does end up with one.

Yeah after out first road trip it was clear there was nothing to fear about pushing it to 0 miles remaining before a refil.

TJ. Looks like you have a great business idea. You should form a company dedicated to rescuing all the Landcruisers left stranded running out of fuel. For all I know this may be market testing to see if there is demand for such a business. Personally I see at least 4 or 5 landcruisers out of gas on the side of the road every day on my 10 mile drive to work.... so to answer your question, no I dont see anyone else dealing with this. You should capitalize now.

Toyota does tend to run a big reserve. It’ll show empty but you actually have a bit left. That said I would not recommend digging into that. Not sure about this one but often, as in the tundra, the pump relies on fuel to cool it so if you’re running into that reserve you’re not cooling down the fuel pump.
