After looking at the website, it is actually a lot more compelling from an off-road standpoint than I had originally anticipated. Not a fan of all-electric vehicles, but with the fuel extender generator option it adds an additional 150 miles for a total of 500 miles of range. No way I'd buy one without seeing some real-world reviews, but it's always good to see some healthy competition to keep Toyota from getting too comfortable, as they tend to do.
 
When production starts 2027, and the entry level starts at 50K, that's not too bad considering.....
I honestly am a little past the too far in advanced release notices. Reminds me of the gaming industry when they would announce a game 1+ yrs in advance to build anticipation and review demand.

that said, cool looking vehicle.
 
My next car if they keep that price below 70. Love the look, love the size, love the hood-trunk. And canopy roof. Wonder what the clearance is? Hopefully 9 considering all the other off road features itโ€™s got.

Regarding the rivian comments:

Aesthetics, materials, and finishes are gorgeous. Also like the ground clearance, detachable sway bars, mechanical lockers, and willingness to add a gas range extender. The split tailgate/hatch with tire rack swing arm is great but can't see how they deal with the auto hatch open button in cockpit.

Beyond the range and recharge times, other issues that have traditionally prevented current generations of EVs from off road duty have been the weaknesses of the CVTs and rear axle motors.

They tend to overheat/shutdown/fail on steep inclines and declines as well as continuous high resistance surfaces like sand.

That is why Toyota still prefers the I-Force Max architecture so it can leverage existing, well proven, and low cost transmissions, transfer cases, and differentials etc. Some good videos at the link below if interested comparing the BYD Shark Hybrid and Ford Ranger Hybrid architectures.

Hopefully Scout can address those issues. However, I would be highly skeptical if they can do it by 2027 and keep the price below $70K but I will be rooting for them.

Yes, and in future generations of vehicles I assume they can spec whatever they need if building from the ground up.

Current generations have leveraged car-based platforms and the weak points in high torque environments have traditionally been heat/friction in the CVT belts and pullies, rear axle electric motors, and brakes. Overall, fine for soft roading but not as robust as old fashioned mechanical transmissions, transfer cases, and lockers for more demanding environments.

Not a lot of details yet on Scout but it will be interesting to see what they come up with. Will electrons and fancy software finally prevail over hardened metal and interlocking gears?

What does everybody think?
 
I really think they nailed the design, even if it does look a bit Rivian. Thereโ€™s only so much you can do with these types of vehicles to give them a heritage off roady look. They should find a niche & be well received if they can keep production like the concepts.

As a pure EV itโ€™s not at all for me. But with the โ€˜hybridโ€™ or range extender or whatever you might think it is, the harvester version could be worth a look. I still wish theyโ€™d have something more akin to a traditional hybrid. But then I might trust Toyotaโ€™s record with the LC over VWโ€™s new entry.
 
Real quick walk through video. I still like the Land Cruiser, but this Scout is going to be popular, it seems very well thought out.

 
I have to say, when I got the Land Cruiser I felt like I was making a number of concessions. If the traveler is delivered as advertised, it feels like my perfect car. Except for the width maybe
 
The Scout looks awesome. Specs are incredible. The thing that really sold me was thatโ€™s itโ€™s going to be โ€œ80% driveway serviceableโ€
The fact that theyโ€™re paying attention to allowing people to work on their own cars without a dealership involved is just awesome. Especially considering itโ€™s an EV.

That's a nice-looking truck but it's way too big. It's almost a foot wider than a Rivian and over a foot wider than a J250. That's a limiting factor on a lot of trails and parking lots.
