Random only partially Land Cruiser related thoughts

Yeah I mean it's just what Toyota said on their official web site. And didn't officially update until much later. I'm not sure why anyone would have taken it seriously. We should have asked Ford I guess?

And it also happens to be a plausible explanation for the size of the gas tank vs. the many other options we see in other markets . . .
If you guys decided to buy a car based on information you saw in a pre-production model discussion that Toyota posted briefly and walked back long before they built the first car, I guess we aren’t connecting. You had access to the official MPG numbers before you took delivery.

In Australia, the LC250 diesel is rated at 7.6l/100Km (almost 31 MPG). Maybe they put that number out there?
Lots of things can change prior to vehicle launch. Maybe Toyota changed some calibrations/tuning for powertrain, spec tire, equipment, etc., but the EPA numbers are the only official numbers that matter and they are locked-in by time Monroney gets slapped on the window before it leaves the Port on the way to the dealer. Even pricing can change (tariffs, anyone?) and the consumer is the ultimate decision maker. I'd say: don't complain after the fact... only my $.02

That's similar to the FJ in overall trends. This trip (getting there and back) was mostly local highways and there's where it does best. Things really plummet on the interstate due to aerodynamics (or a lack thereof) just as with the Land Cruiser.

The Land Cruiser's unexpectedly poor mpg (vs. Toyota's early claims of ~27 mpg) and resulting range would be the only thing keeping me from putting E load tires on it. I really wonder what went wrong between that 27 mpg prediction and what we ended up getting. I wouldn't care so much about the mpg if they hadn't put in a fuel tank for something they expected would get 27 mpg.
I just did the calculation today on mine taken as an average over the past approximately 1000 km. I have averaged 10.4 l/100km, which translates to 22.6 mpg combination city/highway/freeway. Normal mode only, stock size Toyo Gi6 winters on stock LC 18" rims. I've noticed over the past week or so with the somewhat warmer weather (high 50's - low 60's Fahrenheit) the fuel economy is improving and the battery-only mode lasts longer on flat/downhill sections. So it IS possible to get good fuel economy if you want it. I'm having to retrain myself a bit by keeping the real time fuel economy gauge open on the gauge cluster. Rate of acceleration and breaking technique (read "lift and coast") are key.

I will likely revert to my usual driving style over time, but I've been having some fun seeing how good I can get the fuel economy while still being mindful of (and courteous to) other vehicles. If I go out for an evening scenic drive in the foothills with little traffic on secondary single lane highways, I can easily average over 25 - 27 mpg.

Since this post won't die, maybe I should update? I got my Land Cruiser just a few weeks after this post.

Various thoughts after a weekend in part spent off-road (in my FJ):

Every time I drive my Heritage Blue FJ I think I should get a Heritage Blue Land Cruiser. People complement the color all the time, one said he'd never seen it on an FJ before (only the final US year special edition had it). Then I drive past a Trail Dust Land Cruiser (off road no less) and think I should get that instead. (Pic from the dash cam.)

I went with Trail Dust/Java, seen here with a generous helping of trail dust. People also complement this color and seem a lot more surprised to see it than Heritage Blue.

It's really nice having E load tires on a bad road with lots of pointed rocks and not having to worry about it.

The Duratrac RT SLs have done fine so far.

Related, my FJ with E load Duratracs averaged around 18.5 mpg on this trip. It will annoy me if I get a Land Cruiser and it does worse than that while also having a 1 gallon smaller gas tank.

I'm getting 21-22 overall, occasionally better.

Bronco Raptors are too wide to be on most off-road trails. Or maybe just any roads.

Still true.

No just no.
