New owner and 400-mile trip back home

Hi Folks,
Been on the forum for a while now. Just picked up a new 1958 this past weekend. Did a 400-mile trip from the dealership to home.
Here are a few impressions:

• MPG: Averaged around 25 MPG this whole trip back. From my simple math, I think I'm getting around 360 miles from one tank. Filled up with 93 Octane towards the end (that was very expensive), and honestly felt that the engine ran smoother. I'm not sure which gas the dealer put into the tank (they said premium), but overall very satisfied with the mileage.
• Missing key fob: Picked up with only one key fob. Dealer stated the chip shortage still affects smart keys and will get a letter from corporate when the second one becomes available. Is anyone in the same boat as me? After a quick search on the grand highlander forum I saw some people waited 11 months for the second key fob.
• Ride quality: Very nice. Wind noise is very noticeable but not much road noise.

Gonna try to take the car off-road soon. Really enjoyed the car and very satisfied with the purchase.

I keep thinking the alleged "chip shortage" may not be the key fob bottleneck. A couple of years ago, yes, but now? Come on Toyota, ramp up production!

I think you would be getting 450 miles from one tank with 25 mpg (18x25). I got two key with mine, so it may be a new thing with Toyota (or dealer lost one of the keys ). Did they give you a written notice about the second key?

No written notice probably gonna ask the salesperson this week. It’s a bummer but not a deal breaker. Hopefully they get the production together soon.

I purchased a LC LC in September here in Colorado. Same craziness- after all the paper work was done, came in the next morning after they detailed and filled with gas. They said there is only one key??? They said "chip shortage". They said I would be notified in the app when the key came in. Sounds "sketchy".

Hopefully someone at the dealership did not walk off with the key, and some day your LC is stolen.

This chip shortage has been affecting lots of different Toyota vehicles. When we bought my wife a Grand Highlander in February it only came with one key. Sold it in July and still only had one key. The shortage is with a supplier Toyota was using, and from what I’ve heard they’re changing suppliers for 2025 because of that.

So if it were me I'd make the Sealership hook up their diagnostic computer and scan how many keys are encoded to the vehicle. That way you'd know for sure if there's an extra key floating around somewhere.

As an alternative you can purchase a electronic credit card key for a 2024 Tacoma and the dealership can program that into it. I got one for my LC and that's all I carry. It doesn't have any buttons so you have be at the vehicle to lock/unlock the doors but it starts the vehicle flawlessly.

I bought mine at Mountain States here in Denver and got 2 keys. I call bulls**t. Chip fabs are back to normal. I would call and demand a card key until your second key comes in.

I got mine here in Boulder at Corwin. I will make a trip in. I agree they may have lost it or a test driver lost/kept it. I haven't lost a key lately but right now I'm totally screwed if I should lose mine or lock key the one key inside it.

$73 - Emergency key blank, 69515-12350, (for a '24 Tacoma) from Bill Penny Toyota (local dealer)
$10 - To cut the new emergency key blank from locksmith. Not every locksmith can cut this key.
$95 - To program new card to vehicle from Bill Penny Toyota

Musts:
Brand new never programed credit card key
Bring all the existing fobs when getting the card programmed, otherwise any forgotten fob will not work anymore. They need to enter all existing key registrations into the vehicle at the same time.

Theft, I'm not saying that it's still not a Toyota thing, but now days ..... you just don't know for sure.

The key issue is truly a Toyota wide issue... Picked up a RX450h+ for the wife with only 1 key. Same statement, 2 months and will be notified via the app. I ping my rep occasionally to hold him to that. Now my LC, picked that up in May with both.
