Lemon already?

that sounds bad. I've never heard that before on mine. Whats the cause of piston slappage
Excessive tolerances with the piston and engine block wall.

Engines are more prone to piston slap when they are cold, as the metal components expand and tighten tolerances as the engine warms up.

This is why we hear it when it cold starts and after it sounds normal.

best videos for sound so far.
This does not sound like knocking, i.e. detonation, timing or compression warm up issues.
This sounds mechanical only and very possibly a warm up issue. Could be injectors or pump related. I hate to think it is a cam related issue.

I did but didn't get final answer. Lifter, piston slap, d4s injector? Normal...etc. I still have it on mine.
It’s piston slap if it goes away after it warms up. The normal tick is injector noise.

Thanks. Wouldn't piston slap cause long term damage? Mine goes away after warm up.

Post in thread 'Lemon already?' Lemon already?
Yes and no. There’s no way to really know until long term mileage comes up. Most piston slap is fine for 100k plus. I just didn’t want mine to sound like that on a brand new 60k vehicle. They actually replaced my block but I never got to hear it again because i had already went through the lemon law process. Mine was cylinder 1. But I know it’s common in these things.

I’ve only heard of this problem on the Land Cruiser forum. The engine is used in many other vehicles. I’d like to hear what Toyota’s official diagnosis is.

That was Toyota’s official diagnosis. Piston slap. Or are you saying you want a Product Owner from headquarter’s to put out a statement for all of Toyota USA?

Was that Toyota or the dealer that said it was piston slap?
It was a head engineer who chatted with Toyota Product who then told the dealership. All the LCs at the dealership near my house had it and that’s what I was told when I went through my whole process. It also aligns to the symptoms we are experiencing.

Guess it's not a big issue, just annoys me and it's loud.

Also do not cold start any ICE especially a turbo ICE and start to rev it up! Worst thing you can do to any engine as soon as it is started.

On the noise, I have sold many of these 24 & 25 Land Cruiser 250’s and they all sound the same including my own. I think the noise is normal and to me sounds a bit like a small displacement diesel which we will never see bless the US shores by toyota anytime soon.

However there will always be a handful of issues with any manufacturer in a new model. Toyota is known for amazing QC and they test each and every motor/Transmission etc before it leaves the factory. Even at the port they test them out before it hits the showrooms.

The diesel noise you are describing is the injector noise which is different than the piston slap that a lot of people are experiencing. QC or not it’s an engineering mistake that they are writing off as “normal”. Sounds like you have a blown head gasket for 15 minutes until it warms up.

I usually hear it to when I drive off without letting the vehicle warm up. Coming from a 3rd gen Taco I thought this was normal.

My engine was definitely more noisy when cold for the first 500 miles or so. It gradually got less noisy. It is still more noisy when cold compared to after warming up, but not to the same extent as before.

One possibility is due to the injectors breaking in, as there are reports online from other Toyota direct injection motors temporary getting noisy after injectors getting replaced.

Piston slap is also somewhat normal during the break-in period for engines with narrow tolerances. In fact, some like all Subaru boxer engines and early 2000 corvettes will always have piston slap when cold. If it goes away when engine warms up, it doesn’t diminish longevity. It is another story if an engine suddenly develops persistent piston slap.

I don't hear any ticking or anything out of the ordinary at 6K miles

I get this in the mornings after I start up my LC. It only happens when I apply the brakes, though. Not sure if it's related to the engine itself. Any of you experience this?
