Lane tracing assist - garbage

That's a bummer. I was excited to get away from my previous car that required periodic jiggling or pressure. It's unfortunate they didn't add capacitive sensing to such an expensive and newly released vehicle. I'll try applying the directional force next time to see if that solves it for me too.

I played with this a bit, so hope my comments to your questions help:

1. Maybe (defects are possible), but more likely in cases where it's not working the hands on the wheel are not applying steering force, just pressure, which is not what the sensor is looking for.
2. Definitely not capacitive touch on any trim - the system is not checking for "hands on the wheel". Requires driver to apply a light turning force (torque) to the steering wheel even when the car is tracking straight.
3. Correct, though you don't need to hold it firmly (though that likely results in the necessary torque, inadvertently). It's "directional" pressure if you want to call it that.

I'll add I wish it was capacitive, or that it only required torque during turns or when the camera can't see your eyes on the road. Unfortunately, it's like many other systems that requires a little bit of torque on the wheel.
I hadn't thought about it using rotational torque and that makes sense being that it uses electrical power steering and some units may be more sensitive than others.

I added a 12oz weight to mine and it drives itself. No issues it drove over 1200 miles and I only had to add small inputs every 20 to 30 min.

Did you try other weights and found that 12oz was the perfect amount? I’m curious about trying this out because I’ve done 4 12hr+ drives in the last 3 months of ownership and used the LTA extensively during each and it would be nice to not think about torquing the wheel and just resting a finger or two on it somewhere.

Someone here mentioned using a Costco water bottle jammed into the lower triangle. What’s your setup?

For the record I will always be paying attention to the road while driving with LTA and hope everyone else using these systems are too.

I got it off of eBay there are a lot of people who do this to their Tesla's and Rav4s

I've driven over 30 minutes with nothing but the back of my fingers on the outside of the wheel without any issues.

I never go anywhere without my Costco water bottle. Works like a charm. Four in the cool box and one in the steering wheel! 😉

Pretty sure premium has a capacitive wheel. I just use a light touch without any movement and it’s fine. (Two finger tips.). Seems to work even if my knee is touching the bottom of the steering wheel. . Conversely I’ve tried using water bottle / weights and they don’t seem to work at all.

What does it do if there is a rock in the road? Steer you right into it?

I dont know if it does or not (i have premium too) but my experience is same as yours. I just have left hand barely touching it at 9 o'clock or my knee at 6 o'clock. Of course im always ready to pounce for when it tries to kill us.
