One of the hold backs that I have had regarding the LC is the need for only burning Premium grade Fuel. Has anyone tried to use 87 Octane or a mix of regular 87 with say, a 1/2 tank of premium? This engine is identical to the the 4runner Hybrid I just dont understand why Toyota requires premium grade fuel.

A hotly debated subject on many forum discussions. Many report using 87 Octane successfully with no issues. Others swear this will damage the engine. And yes, identical to the 4Runner and Tacoma engine, both only requiring 87. Cannot find it, but a Toyota insider posted that it was to meet a MPG benchmark.

Itโ€™s the same engine but the LC uses a different breed of hamsters in the engine that prefer premium fuel.

Jk and welcome to the forum

This topic has been the subject of a lot of debate on the forum.

Check out out this post for a bunch of different takes: Premium Fuel or not?
What do you mean by "a different breed of hamsters"? The torque and HP ratings are the same. Wish someone would post the graphed curves for the HP/Torque of the LC, 4Runner, and Tacoma.

Thanks everyone. I'll explore this further.

Hi all, I bought my LC LC ON JULY 12TH . Currently I have 10720 miles on it. I have never used premium gas. I get 25+ mpg regularly. I don't face any performance issues.

Oh noโ€ฆAgain?! Hahaha
LC owners can afford Jet fuel ๐Ÿ˜œ

93 for me, but I donโ€™t know why 87 would not work. Then again , I only have 1400 miles in 9 months

The engineers have stated a number of times that 87 will work and wont damage the engine. The premium is listed because it is meant to be a world product and in many areas, their premium is like our regular. It was meant for those situations. 87 will just mean slightly less fuel efficiency and less responsive throttle.

That being said, there is research now showing that premium gas will cause less wear to an engine than regular. Doesn't mean 87 will ruin a car, just that premium is just better long term. I was planning on switching to 87, but now I'm not sure. Sticking with premium for the time being.

Here's the part I still don't (and may never) understand. Using premium fuel should give a bump to both the HP and torque numbers, but our beloved LC gets the same numbers as the 4Runner and Taco. Makes zero sense to me.
I've heard a theory that the premium requirement is about emissions testing. The theory is the LC outputs fractionally less emissions running premium, so Toyota used that for certification purposes. Since premium was used for certification, Toyota must label the LC "premium only".

Stillen has a Youtube video comparing dyno runs on 87 vs 91 gas on the current turbo Tacoma and showed +20hp differences at the wheels. Maybe someone will do this for LC250s but I'm sure the debate will continue.

Except that they would also need to use premium on both the 4Runner and Taco to achieve the same emissions rating. So, I don't think that has anything to do with the LC and premium fuel. If this was about emissions, then requiring premium for the 4Runner and Taco makes way more sense because I'm sure they'll sell way more of those two vehicles.

So was the motor meeting/closer to the rated specs with regular, or with premium?
