Apple CarPlay is Garbage- Did we get the Beta version?

has anyone noticed that the music doesn't mute when you try to engage Siri? I find this makes it hard for Siri to hear you and take your command. especially hard trying to respond to texts with your voice.
On Toyota it’s been like this for years. I complain to the dealership in 2020 with my four Runner Trd pro. It was also like this on my 22 Lexus. Not sure if it’s a Toyota issue or an Apple issue but it’s very frustrating trying to use Siri or Toyota‘s version. Obviously people have complained to Toyota and obviously they do not listen to their customers.

So far so good. But I’m coming from a Mazda experience (random reboots an other fun bugs) so I’m not hard to please.

how do i get out of Apple car play once it has started? How do i get back to the main page from Carplay?

Much thanks

I'd qualify this statement to say that if you have music downloaded to your phone, you can still access it via CarPlay when you have no cell signal. Map renders can fade in/out as you gain/lose signal, but Gaia will randomly hold onto detail without signal, but can also lose the detail for no apparent reason, regaining it randomly a minute later, or an hour later when signal is regained. The Gaia app/CarPlay implementation certainly leaves something to be desired, but not sure if it's due to CarPlay or Gaia. OnX is also randomly marginal without service, but can at times work. I wish there was some sort of interface/settings for the CarPlay implementation in the LC.
I think there is a way to download the route on our iPhones when we know ahead of time that we will lose cell service due to the area that we will be traveling will be short on cell coverage. I just don’t know how to do that.. yet.

I've only had ACP drop once, and it was very inconvenient. I also use OnX offroad maps and have the maps downloaded where I normally go. It is a paid subscription tho' but when there isn't any cell coverage it's a life saver. With the premium subscription you can save your route and see other members routes as well.

Mine has failed to connect about 2-3 times and it was frustrating. Switched to the wire and it worked fine. Did a disconnect and reconnect of the blue teeth and it hasn’t given me an issue in a while.

Ha! I had the exact same annoying experience. Should be obvious, right? Click the group of 8? squares in the lower left, then click the Toyota icon.

Thankfully no issues with connecting, no random drops - and I’m wireless. I’ll add my name to the list of users annoyed by the fact that music doesn’t automatically mute when using Siri though. I wonder if a software update could resolve that.

When you’re looking at the Apple Maps app on the phone, tap your picture or user avatar next to the “Search Maps” input box. You’ll get a menu that includes an “offline maps” option. From there it’s pretty straightforward.

Well, that was easy peasy!!

Pro tip:

If you have a destination in mind, add it as a contact and name it and put in the address (no need for a phone number) that way you can recall it by scrolling and touching the map in the contact or ask "Siri" for directions. I have all my Dr. and other places I visit, put in that way. Not for when I know where I'm at but rather "what's the quickest way to "X". Many a time I have asked Siri for directions to sparky (I have my home address listed as my dog's name) and she guides me back to familiar roads, then I tell Siri to "end navigation". works like a champ.

More frustration today with CarPlay. It connects, but won't let me actually do anything because it thinks a phone call is in progress. Happened multiple times today :( I tried it both wired and wireless and have experienced this issue both ways.

I have been recently experiencing my iPhone being dropped from CarPlay every time I started the LC. Today, for the first time, I could not reconnect it to Bluetooth for CarPlay in the device settings. I could connect it to Phone and media, but not CarPlay, until I connected via cable. The timing is interesting since it is the day after I received a message saying since I had not signed up for an Internet connection on ATT within 60 days (for $20/month), they were terminating some trial. Is there a connection?

Sorry to hear you've had so much trouble OP. I've had next to no problems with Apple CarPlay. There's some quirkiness but maybe 5% of the time. My wife's Acura Apple CarPlay is a major nuisance while the LC is not.

Try using a wire instead of wireless. This has been an issue with other models for years. The solutions are a cable instead of wireless (0 issues in 1k miles in my LC with this method). And then restarting the head unit and reconnecting. To restart the head unit hold the volume/power knob down until it restarts.
I was using a cable and found if I plugged it in before starting the LC, I had issues with Carplay including blank screen, refusal to connect and it acted like I'd never set it up - full of bugs. I went the opposite way and now use wireless with less bugs but still some annoying ones like not recognizing my phone on occasion or suddenly stops working until I shut off the LC and restart

if you plug in before the head unit has fully booted you can def have issues with wired. It’s too funny you mention it. My Tacoma trained to me basically never plug my phone in until after the head unit has booted fully 🤦‍♂️
