2024 Toyota Land Cruiser vs 2024 Lexus GX550

I just found out the LC from the Tahara plant comes off the same production line as the GX. The same workers are assembling both vehicles on that line, at different production times.
Here’s a video explaining some differences between the LC and GX

Yeah I was about to go over trail+ for some of the niceties - massage seats, mark levinson, etc. but noticed it didn’t have rear seat ac controls or ceiling vents. Having kids that’ll be in the back the 3 zone climate controls was more important than front massage seats. Plus I like the Land Cruiser badge and hybrid option better
I need to have a solid sound system in my car. For what it's worth, I find that some of the lux brand systems just aren't as good as they should be for the additional cost. The Harmon Kardon system in my BMW X5 was trash. Haven't heard the Mark Levinson system in the GX, but I will say that the premium JBL system in the LC is surprisingly good. Boost the bass a bit and it's a solid system

We have the Burmeister system in my wife’s Mercedes. It’s nothing special. The Bose system in my Tahoe sounds better.

I finally drove a LC at a dealer yesterday (and found an allocation BTW but different story). I thought the JBL system sounded pretty good.

I agree. I had a Burmeister on my Porsche Cayman GTS, not impressed. The Bose on my Boxster and 911 were much better to my ears.

While I've already placed a deposit for the forthcoming 2024 Lexus GX 550, I'm open to switching, depending on the features and design that the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser unveils. Anyone else in the same boat?
I was in your camp as well, taking the LC in two weeks. Least of the two evils, both full fledge SSMs, Soccer Mom Mobiles. I despise the Lexus snobbery here in Ca. The LC is the best out there for the next 2 years. Ill suffer with that till the FJ 40s are available and most likely ditch SMM #2 for a real move serious wheeler.

I ended up choosing the LC over the GX for a couple reasons. 1) I think the front end is more aggressive and masculine on the LC and overall better looking 2) the extra cost of the GX didn't seem justified after driving both, unless you really care about the 6cyl vs 4hybrid. 3) the electronic dampening, etc in the GX suspension is less reliable and much worse for aftermarket mods (spoke to many experts locally); and I am having a lift and the suspension upgraded

If purchasing today I would buy the GX to avoid the hybrid. I also have an EV so I'm not anti electric. But there is far too much complexity without major benefit in the hybrid.

Also, Lexus seems willing to fix the squeaky brake issue. Toyota standard seems to be headed to Chrysler level.

I watched the Car Care Nut review of both vehicles, and his analysis was material to turning me to the Land Cruiser. He did not directly compare the complexity of the engines, but his comments about the LC hybrid system were largely directed at its simplicity, whereas he felt the TTV6 was complex in several key areas. I’d still expect both engines to have better than average reliability over the long term.

As for the benefit - the hybrid engine in the Land Cruiser wasn’t designed to create more power than a comparable V6 and it wasn’t designed to be significantly more fuel efficient. Although, it is indeed an extremely powerful engine that has much better fuel efficiency numbers than engines generating that kind of power 20 years ago.

The engine exists because of emissions targets. Of cars sold in the US last year (not only Toyotas), all-gas engines averaged 5.71 metric tons of CO2e per year while hybrids averaged 3.13 metric tons. That is, on average, a 45% reduction.

So there is a benefit to the hybrid. Whether it matters to you, I suppose, depends on who you are.

Hopefully not. Stelantis is truly the kiss of death for all products they have touched over the past years.
A real poorly run eurotrash operation.

I originally had a deposit on the GX550. However, I ended up cancelling it because 1) I liked the look of Toyota LC more than the GX550, 2) I could not justify the spending the same amount of money but getting worse gas mileage (similar to our 2003 LX470) and 3) I like the interior of the LC more. Yes, I realize some of these are personal decisions that others may not agree with but it was my decision. I never did drive the GX550 but feel confident the twin turbo v6 would have been fun. I did purchase the LC LC edition which I am really enjoying.

Good comparison from Everyday Driver

My decision process was not that different - I cross-shopped both, and liked the look of both, but liked the LC looks slightly more. I like the LC interior much more…and fewer screen dependent functions (actual buttons) were a plus for the LC. If the LC came with the V6 turbo, that would have been perfect. For me though, the biggest items in my decision were the interior design + exterior color options…the only GX color I like is Incognito, but I already have a car in that color. On the LC, I liked both underground and heritage blue, and went with heritage blue. Very happy with my LC, and haven’t regretted going with the lower-cost option once.
