Done in by a speeding RAV4 on the Highway. It threw a rock, which connected with the bottom driver’s side. Don’t know if it can be repaired, but this led me to another unpleasant discovery. Apparently most insurance companies (mine included) no longer cover windshields. I thought you were supposed to get through a couple of oil changes per windshield.

Windshields are becoming VERY expensive, so sadly but understandable the insurance companies are backing down on this coverage. You may be looking at $1500 by the dealer, give or take, including calibration of the associated electronics (which I question the necessity).

From AAA insurance web site,

"Windshield replacement is covered under the comprehensive portion of auto insurance policies, less any applicable deductible. In a few states, insurance companies are required to waive the deductible for windshield replacement."

Not sure what states are included in the list. Also, even if the deductible is waived they might still have the ability to raise your premiums due to the claim on the policy.

Alas, nothing is free.....

My insurance company covered 3 windshields in 2 years on my Discovery....heated one at that. Even at cost, it was probably a $1,200 cost each time.

I did discover that my insurance carrier (Erie) is either owner or partner with Safelite. There's a reason it's part of your policy, but I'd never use Safelite again after they screwed up 2 of the installs.

Yeah, the good ole days of $50 glass deductibles and $200 windsheild replacements went out the door with the increasing prevalence of complicated camera/radar/lidar systems and heated glass. You can still get insurance help but more often these days your regular deductible applies complicating the math of what is most cost effective - high deductible/lower premium or low deductible/higher premium. For the LC I'd opt for the latter if I was a stickler for perfect glass and you drive at high speeds on dirt roads or live somewhere they put down a lot sand and gravel in the winter. Ask any FJ owner, those vertical shields are real rock magnets and replacements become as regular as oil changes...

Hi Icat63, please do not delay, resin is available to fill in the crack or hole. Glass is under stress. Within days, a crack will start spreading Left and Right. Then it is 2000+ bill

From what I understand, the mirror mount has to be replaced on the new windshield and the camera is attached to that mount etc........ the lane tracking is calibrated to the location of the camera etc.........

We’re just starting a snow storm. Went back out before it got too bad, and there were quite a few little black pieces around the damaged area. This made it look worse from inside than it is. They were resistant to the windshield washer, but I was able to pick most of them off. It doesn’t appear to be a proper chip, but the finish is rough. The glass is damaged, but no large missing chunks. My daughter has the same insurance agent as I do (State Farm). She was recently told they wouldn’t cover a windshield replacement on one of their cars, and that glass coverage was optional. I did a search, and it says it should be part of comprehensive for State Farm. Guess I’ll have to call and find out what’s up. So anyway, it’s about the size of a dime, and the glass finish is damaged. I don’t know if there’s a way to fix it or not. It’s right over the wiper blade, so not sure if the rough glass will damage the blade. Maybe I’ll get lucky, and it can be repaired, but I’m not a glass guy.

I'm on rock chip number three... first two were filled by Safelite and more or less disappeared from view. Caught a decent sized rock just below the wiper two weeks ago and now looking at a 4-5" crack starting to make its way higher. About to submit a claim via insurance to have Safelite replace the whole thing. Only managed to have one windshield replaced on my old Tacoma in 5 years of ownership... maybe just a bad string of luck recently.

I had a rock chip last July and had it filled. I had 1200 miles on it. It has not grown but I have another chip last week on the other side at 14000 miles. It too has not grown. The first was filled in the second not yet.

Hi all, I honestly thought that LandCruisers windshields will have a reinforced strength because these are designed to operate in harsh environment .
Both of my cars in 2024 sustained windshield damages within a week.
Now, I am unhappy again to read LC windshields are flimsy and delicate.

USAA covers windshields under Comprehensive. Deductible applies everywhere except FL, KY, MA, & SC.

Insurance can and will cover it based on your coverage etc, however they will cancel your coverage if you replace it too often. At one point I had 5 cars I was insuring and over 3 years had 7 or so windshields replaced. State Farm cancelled my policy with no other claims, for overusage or whatever their bean counters made up. In Az at least I didn’t even get the glass coverage as it looks like I will be paying out of pocket from now on.

Guess it'll be next week before I get the windshield looked at. I've got to put a snow brush on the list. Thankfully, this is a rarity here.

Ha! State Farm did the same to us about five years ago. We’re also in Arizona. We’d had five windshields replaced in three years and we were insuring four and then five cars at the time as we bought cars for each boy when they were old enough to drive. We pay for windshield replacement but if you use it, you get penalized. I hate State Farm. On Tuesday morning, something hit my windshield and made a star so we had the glass guy come and fill it in. He did it for free because we’re repeat customers. Our roads are dirty and we have a lot of construction and work trucks are everywhere, you can’t avoid it.

Progressive allows purchase of zero deductible windshield coverage. It is independent of the overall deductible for the comprehensive.
