USB-C Flash Drive for Music

My guess is it's just like the old MP3 players. You upload folders of MP3's and you can play it right from the USB stick. Good for if you don't' want to use bluetooth or hook up your phone, etc..

Yes, I use it to store music like an old mp3 player. There aren’t too many instances where this is handy, but I like it.

• traveling with my family: I want to use earbuds from my phone for an audiobook and still have stored music available for the rest of the car.
• tailgating or camping: the music doesn’t cut out when me and my phone wander away from the car.
• someone borrows the car: not a common thing, but the car has its own music without them having to pair a new device.

I do know all USB drives are not created equal. I have purchased two in the past that would not load in my CNC machines, but would load in my computer.

All very good points and some of these I haven’t even thought about. My music collection is over 2 TB so I would have to get a portable SSD drive and try this.

I don't have 2TB but close.........A couple of years ago, I purchased a new digital walkman and currently have approx 3000 titles on it. I used it at work in my cube as radio reception was non-existence. It works on BT in the Taco and those portable JBL speakers. Comes in handy in the mountains.......

Are any of you able to use voice commands to select music from your flash drive? When I try to give voice commands, I'm given a message to log into my Apple music account in the Toyota app.

Has anyone successfully used a USB-C drive for music storage and which one worked?

I ordered one of these and formatted it as FAT32 (twice) and the car doesn’t recognize it at all. It could be I’m doing it wrong or the product isn’t compatible. I did read the manual, but it’s not working for me.

Yes, my phone works great with Bluetooth, but I like a flash drive as well.

Yes. I bought the same exact one you did and had the same results. However I found this post on a UK C-HR forum where someone talked to Toyota support and found an answer.
USB-C that works for Toyota

I bought the same 64g Samsung usb drive, Model MUF64DA/APC. I did not format it, I just copied my files on to it and it was instantly read. My entire music library is flac, either 16 bit cd rips or 24 bit downloads and everything was read and played. I now have ordered a 128g model and I’ll see if I can load it up.

Tested the Samsung USB C Flash Drive in 128GB MUF-128DA/AM and it works great. I did not (re)format, just copied over songs in a few different directories. I used all caps for the directory names (MUSIC, OLD_MUSIC) though I don't know if that is necessary. Windows reported it as FAT32. Plugged the drive into the left most USB-C port under the AC controls. The interface to browse the mp3 is quick and no issues so far, can sort by artist or album and album art shows up for the song playing. Sound quality is good. I do hope for a smaller "fit" style drive to come out but this one doesn't stick out too far.

Are you actually able to use more than 16GB and it's recognized by the LC?

I also use 128 GB and have a lot of music on there. Using folders for browsing with mixes works the best for me. It has to be formatted to FAT32.

Yes. I loaded the 128g one up with about 120 gig of flac files and it reads all of them and plays all of them.

I tried a different (USB A) flash drive with an adapter to USB C, FAT32 is the default on the drive, went to source , clicked on USB and there it was. Awesome. The adapter looks like it is nothing special, it came with my laptop.

Did the same thing you did and it works. I did for checking "Software Update" to copy system info. Will only work with a USB2 flash drive and a USB C adapter.

I was hoping to use USB to load photos for a great slideshow on the big screen. I wish there was an app for that.
