Toyota Extended Warranty Thread U.S. (negotiated price list)

I can read more into it, but since I’m in a “room full” of folks who’ve done it - figured I’d take the easy (wise?) route and ask. lol
lol, good question. No worries, I also haven’t done it yet as I’m still waiting for my LC to arrive. You can add it anytime during your initial factory warranty. It can be purchased from any Toyota dealership. It is also transferable if you sell your LC before the warranty expires.

Here's the newb question for all the others who probably want to know - why the warranty?

I'm interested in investing in a good deal, but I definitely don't want to pay for something that's more hassle than it's worth. Is the VSA worth it?
Hi. Just got my FE and thus far did not opt for extended warranty. I sold my heavily modified ‘19 4Runner with 244k miles, also no warranty. Thankfully it was completely trouble free. The only car I ever purchased an extended warranty for was a second gen Prius, my thoughts were the hybrid system was fairly new with lots of stuff to break. Used it literally the same week I sold it. The AC went out. $900 for new compressor, didn’t cover the cost of the warranty but I didn’t have to come out of pocket for it either. The warranty was transferable and that was a big plus in selling.
Basically it’s a gamble, you’re betting it’s gonna break they’re not. These things make money, lots, for the entities selling them, so most likely don’t recover what they cost. The positive is it a plus for resell and you don’t have to come out of pocket for repairs. The downside is you likely won’t recover what you spend, maybe that’s good, it means your car didn’t break. Consider your financial position, if it would hurt you to come up with say 10k out of pocket then I wouldn’t do it.

That’s a good point. Both of your previous vehicles were also made in Japan like the LC. I do believe that even within the last few years vehicles have become increasingly more complicated. Meeting emissions standards, squeezing more power out of smaller displacement engines (higher compression), using lighter metals, direct injection, turbos, more technology, hybrid tech. Add to that pushing out required maintenance intervals (miles between oil changes, coolant replacement, transmission services, etc). Still it’s not quite the same vehicle with the naturally aspirated conservatively tuned motors Toyota built their reputation on.

I see the VSA in a similar fashion as car insurance (which makes a lot of money for the insurance industry) that most people will not use. Haven’t had to file a claim on any of them, thankfully. It’s a lot of money each year. If we got into a wreck there is a lot of liabilities, medical bills, lawsuits, and repairs. Best case scenario just vehicle damage that costs 5-10k, worst case multiple injuries (100k medical bills), totaled 50-70k vehicles.

Thanks to the information from this thread, the VSA will hopefully only cost a little over 2k for ten years 100k miles. Seven years and 64k miles of post factory warranty coverage comes out to about $315 for each of those seven years. For me it’s just another insurance. Hopefully will never need it but the piece of mind of not having to pay for any surprise 10k repairs is worth $315 a year to me.

I appreciate your answers.

It's a gamble. And, just like a casino - the algorithm is always against the customer, or the company wouldn't be in business.

But this is a bet you're hoping the house wins on. :)

I'm unsure what I will do, but I'm happy to have options, time, and more understanding based on your insight.

Do VSA warranty prices generally go up or down with mileage? Like is there any benefit to purchasing the VSA warranty as soon as possible when mileage is low, or does waiting towards the end of the factory 3 year change the price?
Thanks

Really good question. I don’t know the answer. My guess is no it shouldn’t, but you might get different answers from different sources. Most forum members shared their negotiated prices were below retail. As far as when they purchased their VSA, I forgot to add that question. Assuming most bought the VSA at the time they purchased the vehicle. I imagine that if you add the warranty later some finance managers will give different reasons/justifications for their price quotes. Maybe that’s an higher or lower price based on mileage, maybe up to their discretion. Again it’s a really good question and I don’t know the answer. Hopefully someone will chime in here and give an informed answer.

Currently (October 2024) this thread’s information is limited to the responses here within. So far Jerry Johnson at Midwest Toyota appears to have the market beat. Not a single dealer has offered better discounts. I read about him in this forum’s other (extended warranty) thread and another forum (ih8mud.com). I was expecting negotiated prices to be a little more here and there. Well hopefully more people will share about their deals. I will keep updating the list in the first post as more do.

Thank you Atomic67!

It seems that inmates here are using VSA interchangeably with the Toyota extended warranty. I do not think they are the same, but I might be wrong.

I thought the same thing when I first started looking into it. For some reason Toyota calls their extended warranties “Vehicle Service Agreements” (VSAs) branded Extra Care …Platinum/Gold/Powertrain.

It’s definitely not what I would call it because it could be confused with a prepaid service contract.

Toyota Prepaid Maintenance Plans (PMPs) are called Toyota Care Plus. I am not sure though and my wife will be glad to tell you I am usually wrong. I have learned after 14 years of marriage she is always right, so there’s that.

🤣🤣🤣 Dude.. you owe me a keyboard.

Seriously though.. I used to have the sig line “I might be wrong, just ask my wife” for many of my forums. Then it changed to “I might be wrong, just ask my X”.

Now, I am so glad she is gone.. My kids all know that I never want to be in the same area code as her.

The extended warranty only starts after the years/miles of factory original warranty expires , but it is included in the extended a 7 year and 100k mile warranty is only 4 years and 64k miles after factory expires .
I believe I am correct in this

Yes that is correct!

I work in the industry and many people are considering a service contract, what the consumer would call an extended warranty, more than ever. Toyota continues to evolve into a technology heavy, upmarket car that no longer can take maintenance neglect like your clapped-out Corolla from the early 2000s. Additionally Toyotas are no longer cheap to fix and you can’t compare them to the dinosaur platforms centered around the 1GR-FE or 1UR-FE that could take tons neglect with almost no problem. Does breakdown happen as frequently as a garbage Stellantis product? No. But did a large Tundra screen we just replaced internally under warranty recently cost ~$8,200? Yes. Or an air suspension overhaul that cost a little over ~$25,000? These are things you used to not hear about, but they happen. No one can tell you how to feel about this as services contracts are all about risk tolerance. Are you going to be mad at the engineers, the dealer, or yourself if it happens to you?

This matters on how long you actually will own the vehicle for (as most people don’t keep vehicles more than 3-4 years anymore anyway) and how much you invest elsewhere. I gave an example somewhere else where a potential GX 460 buyer would have scoffed at a service contract being pitched but is absolutely looking the F&I managers tablet or PC regarding the a proposal for one on his new GX 550.

I did it because its a new product first year out. Also it is tech heavy and hybrid! This car has as much tech as our tesla has. The longevity of this is unknown and replacement cost can be significant.

Everyone has stories. I do too with an F150 were I ended up replacing the engine twice before 60k all under warranty but as soon as that ran out I sold it as I was scared I would have to replace it a third time. The cost of one engine replacement was 25k.

Welcome to the forum LAR! It’s a really good question that is well discussed in the following linked thread.

Thread 'Extended Warranty'
Extended Warranty

Lots of opinions for and against extended warranties. Toyota Vehicle Service Agreement (VSA) is an extended warranty by Toyota Financial Services.

The top plan is Toyota Platinum VSA. It is basically an extension of the factory warranty once your factory warranty has expired. For me, I want my warranty to be factory bumper to bumper for ten years or 100k miles. Platinum plan ten years 100k miles is closest to that. That’s just me. Most people are fine with the factory warranty of three years or 36k miles. It’s an individual choice and only you can decide if it’s for you.

I would not recommend thinking of a new vehicle as an investment. That is just a phrase sales people use and it couldn’t be further from the truth. Vehicles are consumer goods that only depreciate. I wouldn’t recommend thinking of an extended warranty as “protecting an investment” either. That is just another phrase used by sales people and it’s deceptive. Think of an extended warranty as insurance to protect yourself from having to pay a large repair bill outside of warranty.

I can only speak for myself when I say that warranties have protected me several times. My current daily is an Audi Certified Pre Owned vehicle. Literally 6 days before my extended warranty expired my engine completely ate itself. It cost over $9600 for Audi to install a new long block (basically a new crate motor from Audi). If I had no warranty I would have had to pay all of that. It was fast and convenient and they gave me a loaner while they did the work. If I had a non factory warranty I imagine it would have been a pain in the ass to file a claim, and would probably not gotten a new motor from the manufacturer. It was all taken care of and I didn’t have any hassles or problems (other than my engine eating itself). Before that I had a Ram 1500 Eco Diesel. That engine failed why still under the original factory warranty. I don’t remember what it cost (covered under warranty) but it was traumatic enough that I told myself on the next vehicle (the Audi mentioned above) I would buy a factory extended warranty. That ended up being a wise choice.

In both of those vehicles I was just commuting home and my instrument cluster just turned into a Christmas Tree. Lights all over blinking and telling me to pull over safely. Recently I watched videos about people with similar experiences when their New Tundra’s suffered similar fates. I also have been following the transmission failures of the new Tacomas. For me it’s worth the $2230 for the ten years and 100k miles to cover anything like that happening outside of the three years and 36k miles. I will sleep soundly and not worry. Our Japanese made Land Cruisers are unlikely to have failures like the Tacomas and Tundras made in the Americas. For me the $2230 is a bargain for peace of mind backed by Toyota Financial. I think that warranty retails for $6500 so I understand the hesitation at retail. Okay, I really didn’t want to turn this thread into a why or should you but I also didn’t want to be rude and just refer you to the other thread. I hope this is helpful for you and I wish you the very best my LC friend!
The extended differs from new warranty , in that body and interior trim, seats carpets and basically anything that is not mechanical or electronic are not covered .
Torn seat cracked dash, bumpers etc not covered ready the VSC agreement

Yes the extended warranty is not the same coverage as the factory new, bumper to bumper warranty. The closest thing to that is the platinum VSA. Here is exactly what is covered in the Toyota Platinum VSA (extended warranty). The grey box in the bottom right corner lists what is not covered.

I picked up my LC yesterday and it was an excellent experience. The dealership was superb. In F&I they were able to give me a great deal on the Toyota VSA Platinum no deductible. I referenced this list and they offered very close to the lowest price on here. I bought it then and there.

1. 10yr/100k mile/Platinum/no deductible
2. $2500.00
3. Lum’s Toyota, Warrenton OR
4. Stacy Burchfield, (503) 861-1144
