2024 LC
I was driving to work a couple days ago when a semi cut off the guy beside me, sideswiping him and causing him to brake. I was able to dodge him (in his Dodge) and brake myself, but then lo and behold, the dude behind me, likely on his phone, creams the back of my truck. I'm sad and not impressed.

One thing I was NOT impressed with, is that my truck wasn't drivable after the collision. I got an error message saying 'Hybrid System Compromised - Tow to Dealer' and I was able to limp it into a parking lot to await a tow. I understand the need to protect the battery, but then shut it down and let me drive without HEV!

Now I have to wait for insurance to do their thing, then it goes to the bodyshop for who knows how long... I hope parts are easy to get by now.

Ooof! Glad you're okay and I hope the speed of it all is quick. Let us know the cost of repairs though, that will help paint the picture for future repairs

Insurance finally got to my appraisal yesterday. $12,000CDN in damage. They said the frame is not bent, but the rear frame crossmember (bolt off) is being replaced. It goes to the dealership's collision center on Monday and they may find more.

Now it's a question of how long parts will take...

Make sure they check the battery pack, that error makes it sound like the battery may have got damaged.

Somewhere around here is a thread that follows a YouTube garage rebuilding an LC that got caught in a front/rear collision sandwich and was totaled. There's a mess of mechanicals hidden in that lower passenger side quarter panel/bumper area that are part of the hybrid system (battery cooling and whatnot) so not surprising if you got clipped there that it's offline. Too bad though that the backup starter system can't keep you running on ICE alone while you are waiting on parts.

OP, did I understand you correctly that this rear end collision made your 250 physically undrivable??

It is prudent to deactivate the hybrid battery. If the battery or wiring is compromised, a short circuit could easily occur, potentially leading to a fire. The last thing you want is a hybrid battery fire over the gasoline tank. Disabling the hybrid battery is a safer alternative to risking a potential fire.

Indeed. Got hit. Exchanged particulars, got back in my truck and I only had battery power. The dash was screaming at me telling me that the hybrid system was compromised, and to tow to a dealership. I limped it into a parking lot to await tow. Not impressed at all that I couldn't at least use the ICE.

Ahhh, yeah you are likely right. Still would be nice to be able to use my truck after being rear ended.

I wonder if there's some type of inertia switch that trips.......... The old fords used to have one for the fuel pump, that was easily resettable.

If you get the chance ask the repair people what the fix was.

Fun update for those who are interested:

Got word back from the Autobody shop that parts have been ordered, are on backorder but should arrive by the 25th of this month. Not as bad as I though. They budgeted 9 days for the repair.

Now, the insurance adjuster didn't know why the vehicle was stalling when started and wanted Toyota to diagnose it, but if it was found not to be related to the collision then I would have to pay the diagnostic fee of $300... My question to them was how the #$%@ would it not be related because it stopped working when I was hit! I said it nicer than that but long story short, they did the diagnostic, and couldn't tie it to the collision.

Why you ask? Because the intake had broken off the throttle body. I have questions about this... I'm a YouTube mechanic so in other words not super smart about engines, but isn't that in the engine bay? Now I actually understand why they couldn't tie it to the collision. Unfortunately that's when it happened so my bigger question is how a rear end collision could cause damage in the engine bay.

End of the day if parts are here at the end of the month, repairs are to take 9 days, I hope to have it sometime in mid-April. Not the worst when I was expecting May-June (in my head anyways).

Autobody shop found repairs will be just under $14000CDN.

Does anybody have an opinion about the oil after sitting for a month and a half? When I eventually get it back, should I change it or should it not matter?

Really sorry this happened to you and your new Truck. Dang. Glad you were not hurt. It will get fixed and hopefully, you will be on your way to many miles of enjoyable Land Cruiser Driving. All the best. Oh, my grandmother was Canadian and I am very glad Canada is standing up to our chaotic leader. We need Canada and I hope this nonsense will pass sooner than later. Dr. M.

Your choice on the oil, it's not going to hurt anything to change it and it will be fine if you don't.

If it was close to an oil change anyway (less than 1K left before the normal change), I might change it....... otherwise I'd just leave it alone.

Thanks Doc. I've got lots of family in the States and many people I know do too. Hopefully get the car back in 3ish weeks... My Kia Sportage rental is okay, but it's no LC!

Gracias EOD for the insight as I consider you the guru of this forum. I just changed the oil at 5000kms and it only had 57XX on it when I got smooshed so I'll just leave it till 10k then.
