Savagegeese LC review is out

I'm still in the new car honeymoon phase with my LC, so when I saw the Savagegeese review come up in my youtube feed, I was afraid to watch it. I was fully prepared for those guys to dunk all over it. Much to my surprise, they didn't!

I like Savagegeese and his Patagonia jacket-wearing cohort. However, I questioned his car knowledge when he purchased a used Volvo XC90 R-Design, spent a crazy amount on ceramic coating, and was completely surprised when it turned out to be the most unreliable and troublesome vehicle he'd ever owned. In fact, so troublesome he had to get rid of it.

It is common knowledge in the auto industry that the Volvo XC90 is an absolute mechanical nightmare and should not be purchased. Savage should know this as reviewing / researching / testing cars is what he does for a living.

He does like the Landcruiser though.

I appreciate that they didn't do a media day video. Those are very unhelpful for real world application, and you get 30 exactly similar reviews trying to make it look like they did some real journalism.

I was hoping that they would share their opinion about the build quality and quality of drive train and suspension components when they had the vehicle on the lift. In past videos they have done some deeper dives into this and the discussion has been interesting.

It seemed they really wanted to not like it - the cynical skeptics is their brand! To be fair, they could have been much more critical of the handling given their typical auto choices. I was impressed that they called it the best handling and refined Toyota truck they have driven, and their emphasis on the made in Japan fact even if that wasn't reflected in their pricing comments.

I have found reviewers either get or don't get the 1958 model which is reflective of the general public as well it seems. They seemed to waffle around that but got it in the end. We did purchase a 1958 for it to be a 15 to 20 year vehicle thats rugged, capable, and refined on the road. We have had it since Friday, 500 miles of which about 1/3 are gravel, and it has delivered what we wanted along with 22mpg.

That review was a nothing sandwich, considering how much time they had to reflect. Seems like they were mostly pissed at not being able to gun it during Toyota's event.

Yeah, that felt like a real half-assed review compared to their normal ones and the fluff piece they gave the GX. Grudgingly positive. Kind of weird vibe.

Don’t most people watch reviews “after” the fact for self affirmation anyway?

I do enjoy watching the guys at SG. Mostly for entertainment (since I found the care care nut) but they do on occasion bring up key points that I could have overlooked.

They emphasized the price a couple times but at least mentioned that everything across the board is going up in price. Most people who knock on the LC like to hyperfocus on the price but don’t seem to notice that a GR Corolla out the door is $45k (50+ for a CE!) A basic 4 cylinder Camry is $35k!

Their review came across as quite positive to me. It’s impressive that Toyota was able to improve both on-road and off-road capability with the LC250, because those things are usually mutually exclusive. I do wish they commented more on the underbody, it really is a work of art .
