Now that the OEM performance exhaust system (shared with the 2025 4Runner) is available through Toyota parts dealers, has anyone made the swap for the standard exhaust or got it as part of their original build? Would love to hear how the new system compares with the original in term of sound (volume and sound quality) and if there are any issues with drone at highway speeds. Also, is the swap something that could be done by a competent DIY’er or would it need to be done by the dealer? I know there are aftermarket exhausts available for less $ than the factory system, but this question is just about the factory option.

Eric at Ed Martin posted this video of the swap. Says it is easy DIY. I’m interested too…sounds nice. Just wondering what benefits/drawbacks besides sound does this provide?

That sounds pretty good in the video, but it will drone. They all do.

“Performance Exhaust” is the art and science of reducing restriction in the exhaust chain to allow more sound to pass, and to tune the sound to be appealing. Drone is inescapable because it’s the same sound we like when the throttle is heavy throttle for a brief moment, but instead at light continuous throttle. You can’t really have one without the other. The absolute best aftermarket exhausts try to engineer out certain vibrational and sound frequencies to minimize the drone at RPMs where it would be most noticeable, but it is still there.

There are vehicles that have exhaust systems that are switchable between a “normal” and a “performance” mode, but the mechanics to achieve that are extremely complex. I personally haven’t seen one like that available as aftermarket.

All of these exhausts sound OK at idle speed and sound cool when revving the engine. The question is what they sound like at 2200 RPM going down the highway, and in most cases the only way you get to find out is to install one.

People will sell you on performance improvement from these exhausts, but if there is any it’s solely academic. It’s all about sound.

IMO and IME only.

It's great this video was made for us to see and hear it. Hopefully someone out there has access to a 4 wheel dyno to see if it adds any hp to the wheels!

Oh a must have at some point to void boredness, however only a sound improvement, have no doubt.

I just ordered it. It'll be a while though before I pick it up and have it installed. As I've written previously it's the only thing I don't love about the truck.
Pls share all when you get to it.
I heard my friends new Bronco this weekend, i'll have to have it also just cuz.
Glad your doing this mod.

Do you have the three part numbers handy?
Axle muff -
Tail pipe -
Hardware kit -
Thx.

Please let us know if you can use the tail pipe only on stock center pipe, since i only need the clearance not the sound.
