I doubt crash test ratings are affected at all by the smaller fuel tank. The GX550 is basically identical and uses a larger fuel tank.

I’m guessing part of the design is to make sure fuel is getting to the pump if you’re running low and on severe angles while off roading. It would be interesting to see pictures of the GX550 fuel tank design to see if it has similar features.

That said, there is clearly room for at least a 20 gallon tank which they should have done.
