OEM rear differential skid plate installation

Well mixed results today. I attempted to install which is relatively straight forward. It's a little finicky getting the brackets under the break lines but if you are careful it can be done (my tip would be to add a little lubricant between the rubber insert and the metal bracket to allow it to slid easily). Unfortunately at this point I realized the kit that was sent to me was the wrong one as the brackets provided will only work with a much smaller axle. Referencing the part number on the instructions provided by a member here confirmed this. Toyota was happy to take it back, but unfortunately the correct part number has a stop sale order here in Canada with no pricing available. My guy is trying to see if he can get the ok to order it

The install instructions are noted at the top to be for "2025-" model year(s). Is this item (or another) for the 2024 LC as well?

As mentioned, if this reduces ground clearance by an inch or so, that may be an issue for my use case.

I think the low point is close to the front, under the sway bar disconnect? I’ll try to remember to measure clearance before & after.

What PN did they ship you? I’ll have to double check mine when it arrives.

Anyone got on-hand the skid plate of rear differential, would you please give me the measurement of this (see photo). Thanks much!

It's hard to measure the center (which is I think what you want) because it's curved. The center thickness from bottom of the metal plate to where it will rest on the bottom of the differential -- i.e. how much it will reduce clearance -- is about 19mm/0.75" plus or minus a few mm.

I just installed the rear diff skid plate. First of all shout out @Markarian421 for posting the install instructions here. Those instructions were spot on and everything fit like a glove.

Here's some pictures to confirm the part number and complement the pictures already in this thread to help the fellows here with the install.

It took me an hour and that's with me not having a 12mm socket for my 1/2" drive click torque wrench but my neighbor saved the day. I don't even know why I didn't think about the click wrench being a half inch drive. But that's the cool thing about doing these things yourself. Super fun for a software guy.

Cool to see one installed! How much do you reckon it reduces ground clearance?

About a half to three quarter inch. But it feels a bit less than half. That diff is already one of the lower spots and whenever you see these videos with people scraping on big bumps it's always the rear diff. And the half inch is all rubber.

I installed mine today. A few quick notes, I’ll write more on my build thread probably.
  • Clearance is decreased by 9/16” according to my laser distance thingamajig measuring to the center of the low point.
  • You do need a short/small socket for one of the brake line bolts. I got it started with a 1/4” drive socket, then removed and started it again with a wrench.
  • Unlike the directions, it seems like you need to hook one end of the bracket under the sway bar, then carefully(!!!) move the brake line out just enough to get it under. The directions seem to say you would get it under the brake line first, but I could not figure out any way to get it under the sway bar if I did that.

Does this become the new low point for ground clearance?

Must this be completely removed to drain and fill with new fluid?

I need to measure. From other folks measurements I thought the low point was near the sway bar disconnect. Not sure if this will change that.

Yes it needs to be removed to drain and fill the differential, but once installed it’s just four bolts to remove it like the other skid plates.

Thanks for all the updates here! Just to quadruple check, this is part number PT228-89254 correct?
