New to Land Cruiser - braking is "interesting"

About a month ago, I had something similar......... as an idiot swerved around a slowing car to turn into the neighborhood, doing at least 40 mph, right into my lane........... I stomped on the brakes in a panic stop and Betsy stopped right now!

Gosh I am glad you and Betsy were good! My speed was up close to 50 so, it was a little challenging.. but I’m not disappointed, It happened so fast. I’ve still not got the name yet for mine, but today could have an impact on that !

I have a braking question: When all the safety features are turned on, and my Land Cruiser essentially brakes itself when cars are stopped up ahead... is this electric motor braking or mechanical braking?

Emergency breaking performance is really poor. Regularly breaking is fine. Snow and ice isn’t bad in modulating the breaks, but overcoming the weight on slippery surfaces is a problem. LC had maybe 500 miles on it when was caught in a torrential downpour and people decided to just come to a dead stop and I was cruising at 65 MPH and had to lock it up. Luckily got stopped, but wow it was unsettling. Back end started coming around, major dipping in the front end, and slid. If I wouldn’t have steered out the backend, could’ve gotten out of control.

Would you say your experience was a result of the braking system, or hydroplaning with the marginal factory tires?

Braking system. Didn’t hydroplane at all, on aftermarket tires: Cooper Discover Road+Trail AT. I’ve had to slam on the brakes one other time at about 35 MPH when a deer ran out and similar experience. No ABS kicked in, just locked up and slid and the backend went a little sideways. Stopped inches from the deer. Not sure how Toyota did such an awful job with the brakes, as the GX breaks have very positive reviews. Definitely always keep the breaks in mind when I’m driving knowing the long stopping distance and needing to be prepared to keep it in control in an emergency.

Driving too fast for the conditions??? 🤔
That’s a matter of opinion. I don’t think so at all. Was on the highway and at posted speed and got stopped when people decided to just come to a dead step in the middle of the highway. My previous car would’ve come to a stop without fuss, and I had plenty of space, but the poor breaks and weight caused a lot of fuss and closed that space significantly.

Going at 65 with torrential downpour is too fast for conditions.
