Multimedia screen goes black

Last evening the multimedia screen went black and unresponsive. I had tried to set navigation to head home from an unfamiliar location, and Carplay wouldn’t register after the Toyota navigation failed to register our destination, then suddenly the screen went black and would not come on. I navigated my way back using Google Maps on my phone after turning off bluetooth. After stopping, I turned the truck off and restarted it. The system came back on and all appears fine.

This temporary failure put me in a very difficult position, and if it were to happen again it could be worse.

I will call the dealer and see if it’s a known problem that can be resolved, but not hopeful.

Anyone have a similar experience?

It's happened to me a few times. I suspect it's related to the issue of Wireless Carplay not working after a remote start (regardless of whether the remote start is triggered by the App or the key fob). I believe, but am not certain, I corrected this by "rebooting" the screen by holding the tiny volume knob on the dash down for a few seconds which seems to reboot the sreen and system, but does not resolve the wirelss Carplay dilemna.

Frustrates me to no end that I can't use wireless Carplay. Winters are cold in Saint Louis, and I have a detached garage. Warming up my LC is important to me first thing in the am. Seems like Toyota should have been able to fix this with a simple software update. Sorry, I extended the black screen query into a Carplay rant, but the black screen seems to follow remote starting for me, and that is preceded by a failed Carplay launch.

Mine did not occur following remote start, but Carplay did fail to launch and I was trying to use the Toyota nav, which was unresponsive, then the whole thing went down.

Thanks for the tip on using the screen power button to reset - that would have simplified my trip home!

And thanks for the Carplay bashing, it is well deserved in my opinion. I had rented a Subaru recently and the CarPlay implementation and use was flawless- get it together Toyota.

The programmers they have at the Plano Texas head quarters where they code the infotainment system aren't exactly the highest paid programmers you could have.

Happened to me 3 or 4 times and I could not figure out how to get it back on. Holding down the reset/volume button did not work. It came back on the next time I started my vehicle. Very frustrating and odd. I am not sure I understand these explanations regarding carplay.

Editing this response to note my phone is Android, specifically Samsung Galaxy S24.

If you heat up your LC with remote start and then turn the LC off and back on when you get into it, does wireless CarPlay work then? I don't have mine yet, but the CarPlay issues have me second guessing even taking delivery because there should be no issues at all with something like that. I have a 3 year old Honda that has never had a single issue with wireless CarPlay, so I'm questioning why I would pay 20% more for a new car that can't even do something basic like wireless CarPlay.

First-hand knowledge of what they're being paid?

FWIW, the only issue I have with CarPlay or the infotainment system at all is after a remote start I just have to re-enable the setting. That's the only complaint I have. I've yet to direct-connect my phone to anything USB port. I can use Carplay for Apple directions and my kids and can run the audio via Bluetooth at the same time, no issues.

Re-enabling (settings/bluetooth-devices/select CarPlay) worked to re-establish CarPlay for a while, then stopped. The only way I can get wireless CarPlay to work is to “forget” my phone, then re-pair it. The next time I remote start it, back to ground zero.

I travel a lot and rent cars a lot (35+ flights on Southwest alone). CarPlay, and wireless car have been easy and fast on every rental. This failure is limited to my own LC. Sounds minor, but ai like my music, and Toyota’s Nav app is blissfully unaware of traffic jams that Google Maps, and my own eyes, easily recognize.

The CarPlay complaints really have me wondering if I should move on to a different vehicle before I take delivery of mine. I can live with some flaws, but having to mess with my car and phone to get it to work every time I get in the vehicle isn’t really one of them, and that’s straight up embarrassing for Toyota. I’m wondering why if it’s so prominent that I had to come to this board to find out about it, and no reviews of the vehicle either written or in video format mention it at all?

Exact same issue and very frustrating considering wireless carplay is not new technology anymore.. And agreed, ridiculously cold in STL and even worse in Defiance..

I’ve encountered the occasional hiccup with CarPlay connectivity. Not enough to call it quits on the platform, however. Not by a long shot.

For me, everything “weird” was resolved by the hard restart ala iPhone trick. And since the LC is OTA capable, I’ll wait another year before I truly judge it.

Can’t say I’ve really had any major issues with wireless Carplayin the LC. Very reliable.

In every vehicle I’ve had with CarPlay, and there have been several, there was occasionally a time when the sync didn’t work. In all cases a restart of the vehicle, or phone, or both resolved the issue.

The strangest was a Pioneer head unit I had in a Miata NC that would just hard crash. I’d wait exactly 3 min and it came back to life.

My Jeep was way worse; it would just die and go black screen. Sometimes it would come back on, sometimes not. Sometimes even a direct connection via USB cable didn't work.

My LC has been perfect except on remote start having to just Bluetooth > Enable CarPlay. That's it. Could be your phone?

i too have had the black screen after remote starting a few times. very weird. this vehicle has more electrical gremlins than it should IMO.. it's not like toyota is reinventing the wheel with any of the systems on here. i've had numerous late model toyotas and all their electrical systems function normally. not sure why the LC should be any different... yet it is.

The black screen on remote start happens all the time so that seems to be by design.
You also have to push the brakes and start again when you get in the car after remote start.

All these people complaining of this problem happening on a random should mention what kind of phone and model you're running. I have never had any issues like this on my LC and it seems like I'm not the only one .

Back when I was a teenager working tech support I used to get calls from these same people on this thread complaining of their black screens and whatnot and it was usually not the computer, get it. It's you.

This is starting to sound like a meme rather than a legit complaint. 8 bit byte me.

lol wat. no it doesn't

so your confirmation bias is allowing you to say that because it hasn't happened to you and some others, it must not be an issue, yet at the same time are deciding to assume that because it does happen to others it can't possibly be an issue with the vehicle, yet operator error.

you should apply the same logic to the tundra owners who have had their motors fail.

hasn't happened to them all so it must be user error!

Fair enough. iPhone 15 Pro, always updated to the latest system update within 30 days unless it’s bug-ridden.

Phone connects to each of my 3 headphones perfectly, connects fine with my wife’s ‘24 Prius, and each of 20+ rental cars I have used since last fall; multiple makes, models, years. Phone works perfectly in every use scenario I have, except wireless CarPlay in my LC. Could it be my phone? Sure. But when all the world seems perfect except for this LC connection, I am skeptical.
