Does anyone know if it is possible to turn off the lane keeping assist., or the safety aids period. Can you turn it off each drive or permanently? I've read through the book and I don't see anything.

Curious also. Possibly with a Carista? BTW, welcome to the forum!

I haven't found a way yet. I think we are locked in a twisted safety sense 3.0 hell

Page 10 of the attached PDF (taken from the owner's manual) indicates you can turn it off.

On mine (UAE Spec) theres a button on the steering wheel where you can turn it on and off... next to the cruise control on the right-hand side of the wheel.

I turned all that stuff off. You need to activate the main display menu using the steering wheel buttons. (Not the media screen). It is a bit clunky to operate but once turned off everything stays off. Lane keep assist is the horrible feature that bumps the steering wheel when it thinks you are driving out of the lane. Very unsafe IMO. Lane trace assist is a different feature that has its own steering wheel button. It is related to the automatic cruise control and normally is not intrusive.

I was suspect of Toyota SS 2.0 in our RAV4 Prime, but learned the system's idiosyncrasies, and learned the value of having most of the systems turned on. SS 3.0 is significantly better, and can be configured a variety of ways to suit a driver's needs. If you do a lot of highway driving, you'd be crazy to not use the adaptive cruise control and lane keeping to their full potential, as they nearly drive the car effortlessly... and more safely than most humans I see on the road. Certainly, there are times when lane lines cause the system to stray, but it seems to happen less often that when it was new. The biggest 'problem' with the adaptive cruise control is that it cannot identify a stopped car on the highway in front of you until a true panic stop is required, but I'd guess it would still stop the car. There are limits, and you still need to pay attention.

Luddites can certainly unite and turn it all off (for the most part), but I encourage people to use the systems and learn what they can and cannot do before just ignoring the advancements that electronics make possible. I'd never want a manual transmission in a 4WD vehicle either, so call it as you see it.

Hi MSwaz,
To my understanding, Most of those safety technologies can be turned off permanently. Through Left side of steering wheel. Please hit OK to start. You need to be quick or hit the back arrow, right above to go back, if you miss something.

Welcome to the asylum.

I think you can theoretically turn it all of, which I have also done, but I can confirm the car still does try to take over in some circumstances, meaning these nannies remain on in some fashion. The damn thing braked for me the other day when someone cut in front of me, which is dangerous and not helpful, as no braking was needed, I am the driver, and another car was accelerating behind me. And perhaps most annoyingly, the useless driver monitor will still thrown up a message anytime its threshold is triggered. I drive 99% of the time with my left hand at 12 o'clock on the wheel such that my hand and arm frequently block the sensors, and despite nominally being off it is still plainly on.

I am a Luddite when it comes to Land Cruisers. Guilty as charged. I want mine to be as 1980s like as reasonably possible, without the rust of course!

But I am also a former high performance driving instructor and I do pay close attention when driving. The lane keep assist is anathema for me. If I need to move over to pass a cyclist I don’t need the car to impede this movement. Or if I crest a hill and have to move over to miss a downed tree, or if a kid is running from the right so I move left to give more reaction room….having the car bump the steering wheel isn’t helpful. If I’m out of the lane it’s deliberate. Always.

Self driving cars are no where close to being as safe as a regular car with an attentive driver. These lame safety features that I prefer to disable are not for everyone, regardless of the electronic wonderment factor.

I do like backup cameras and blind spot monitors. But don’t depend on them.

Amen, brother!
