Harsh downshift to first gear just before stopping

I haven't experienced the harsh, jerky, clunky downshift just before coming to a stop that others have posted about. Some posters have mentioned the harshness may be the change over from regenerative braking or the hybrid battery. But others have commented that it may be related to the transmission.

I just noticed on the GX550 forum that for that vehicle with the same behavior, a dealer cleared or reset the transmission's memory and that resolved the issue. Apparently, the transmission has a memory that learns how the vehicle is driven and stores that information.

I had this initially but it disappear on its own. It could be a break-in procedure that the dealers are "skipping" by resetting the transmission software.

I have this issue and it was so bad one time, I had to apologize to my passenger. The other day, I even saw the yellow caution sign light on my dash and nobody was in front of me.

Tried everything and just when I thought it went away, it would come back. Found myself looking for a future replacement vehicle and this morning, made a service appointment with dealer.

Today, I turned back on PDA. Problem has now gone away. I think what I was actually feeling was not hard down shifting, it was the brakes being applied.

Something is wonky with the safety systems in this vehicle and I bet that is why it was updated for 2025 and includes new system sensors.

Which sensor was updated?

  • The Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection has enhanced detection capabilities thanks to new system sensors. It receives enhanced intersection support with improved detection capability in certain circumstances. In addition to pedestrian and bicyclist detection, this system now includes the capability to detect a motorcyclist.

That is talking about the enhancements they made for TSS 3.0. Which is the same system 2024 has.

  • Including the addition of Proactive Driving Assist, the Toyota Safety Sense features have been enhanced for TSS 3.0:

I’m pretty sure the 24 has this also. This is all part of safety sense 3.0
Yeah 2024 press release has the exact same section.

Hi Everyone,

Im your LC250 mate from Saudi Arabia. Im previously owned Lexus GS350 F 2016 for 9 years drove around 200k miles and Im sort of familiar with toyota transmission brain. Anyhow, I owned my 2024 LC (full option Adventure) for 4 months/5K Miles and the only thing that irritated me other than the wind noise is the transmission lag and harsh shifting both up or down. Anyway, after too many searches including reading through this forum and based on the experience of my colleagues of new LC owners in my country (around 20) we did the following and it seems working for most of us but it takes time and patience for the stupid valve body to memorize your driving style and start doing smooth shifts:

1. Dont use ECO mode. It tells the valve body to do very early shifts at low RPM to save fuel up to confusion level, it feels like a hit or push. Especially at first gears and cold oil temperature.

2. Turn off ECO light indicator from the main settings. Does not sound logical but it is working for some reason.

3. (Very important) Drive on sport mode for a while, with different driving styles low and high RPM and keep using it regularly.

4. I didn't reach to this stage yet my self. To reprogram / reset the transmission programming through computer at any toyota workshop after that do step 1,2,3.

The useless technicians & engineers at the dealership wont really help in resolving this matter or wont bother as their goal to do quick service and utilize the man hours to generate money as much as possible with the very obvious fixes.

I hope this will help you guys. Best of luck.
