Found a decent option for those of you who are mildly OCD (like me) about having the camera blocked with a rear tire carrier. Currently there is no option to tap in to the existing camera system to add a camera, and I did not want to move my factory camera. So I installed a camera, and ran it to a small screen mounted to my windshield (top right of rearview mirror). It's a suitable short term solution until someone makes a module to tap in to the existing system.

If anyone is considering a hitch mounted tire carrier, Dirtcom's customer service is second to none. Easy install and very sturdy.

Thanks for the great pictures. What is the brand of the third part camera and screen you installed?
Do you have issues with the rear mirror camera being blocked at all, or just the backup camera, with the Dirtcom carrier? I’m considering purchasing this setup. I’ve seen a lot of different images of this installed on the Land Cruiser, and have noticed that even with the mount all the way in to the third pin, the tires seem to be different distances from the door. Is there a way to make the rear tire sit closer to the door so it doesn’t have such a large gap? I understand the mount can only go so far in, but the tires seem being closer is my concern/desire. (Sorry for all the questions, you just have the setup I’m looking for.)

Thanks for the write up. I am still waiting for my carrier. Still have not made up my mind on the rear view camera, but will consider this as an option. Thanks for the photos.

The camera is a Rydeen HD4, and the screen is a BOYO Vision 5" HD. It was the best option for screen for me given the small footprint I wanted it to have, and a solid fixed mount. It will come off in a year or so when a module comes out to tap a camera in to the existing system. I am happy with this set up. It does everything I need it to, and was relatively inexpensive. It did take a fair amount of time to install properly with disconnects in all of the right places so I can remove the tire carrier if necessary.

The rearview mirror is very mildly impeded by the top of the tire, but I come from a long line of Land Rover Defender/Discovery(s) so the tire on the back is nothing new.

The gap in between the door and carrier was a concern to me as well, but when I mounted my 3 gallon Rotopax and DMOS shovel, it took up quite a bit of that gap and looks better IMO. Also, if the tire was any closer you wouldn't be able to use the glass. I use the glass quite a bit without opening the arm. I'm used to the gap now and really like how solid it is.

@cmpugh7 - nice camera setup! I’m about to order a wireless rear cam and screen to try for when I have the Dirtcom on. I only run it for longer trips but miss the rear camera for sure. Problem is the Maxtrax take up the best camera location so I’ll try mounting it to the plate or maybe the carrier itself.

Alternative way to carry maxtrax with dirtcom spare tire carrier. With that way, you can hang your trash bag on the tire. No view obstruction at all.
I also try to carry maxtrax on the molle side window panel (will have photo soon)
