Come on Toyota, no side rear view defroster on 1958s?

I mean I guess the heat circuit wiring could be in all mirror housings and they ran out of non-heated glass and installed the JDM heated glass (it's been reported only the US version has the heated icon). Stranger things have happened.

Frankly I’m not seeing how ice buildup on the side mirrors is going to be a huge concern. I live in Colorado and haven’t ever had a problem with it.

Frozen windshield wipers? Now that is a problem. But not the side mirrors.

I have a LC LC so my mirrors heat. But I haven’t used that feature yet.

It's probably actually a bigger problem for those of us in more temperate regions... here in the mid-Atlantic, ice, sleet, and freezing rain is much more common, and I've definitely had to deal with side mirrors completely frozen over before.

I'm usually parked in a garage now, so it's not a huge concern of mine

Here in Utah, our 2019 rav4 sits outside and believe me the mirrors freeze. So why would Toyota wire the heated mirrors to the rear defrost switch? If the rear window is frozen then you would most likely have the mirrors frozen. Folks, this is a safety issue! I would prefer to give up the auto folding mirrors for heated mirrors.

Are you guys talking about ice buildup overnight that you scrape off in the morning when you clear off the snow, or is ice somehow forming on your rear-facing side mirrors while you drive down the road?

Ice that builds up overnight. Not having any issues with ice while driving.

Exactly!

My mirrors fog when I leave the garage in the morning and can ice now and then if I leave it outside overnight in the winter. Now the question is: Has anyone had the mirror apart to see if the wiring is in there? If so it will be easy to add heated glass.

It is very doable to add heated mirror glass.

What I do not know is if the wiring is in place from the Power Distribution Box/Heated Mirror relay to the door pass-through connector.

How do we find out? Access the door connector and test with a voltmeter?

If you pull off the dvr's side kick panel and finaggle the white connector holder thingy, you might be able to see if you have a gray / purple wires going into the pin slots. You could also pull the rubber boot off the "A" pillar and see if you have a wire missing from that side. This isn't an easy task but doable. It took me quite awhile when I was searching for the dvr's door "unlock" wire. The actual tabs that hold the two connectors together are located in the "A" pillar side and are difficult to locate due to the door not opening far enough. If I remember correctly the connectors are large and yellow.

Everytime I see one of those LITS posts with 6 inches of snow on a LC that has clearly been driven like that it makes me want to scream!

Brush the damn snow off and scrape your windows and mirrors BEFORE you drive in the winter.

Thanks for the advice. However. You failed to understand the whole point of this thread. For a 60k plus vehicle that comes with heated cloth seats, steering wheel and heated wiper blades, you would think adding two lenses and some wiring would have been nice to the package. Now we have to fend for ourselves to try doing a mod that should have been standard equipment for a vehicle sold in the snow/cold belt.

Finding if there is any wiring will be the first thing. I thought I saw the heated mirror glass for around $100 so that would be worth it.
We get a few freezing rains every winter and it is nice to hit the remote start and walk out to a warm and clean truck/mirrors.

Even if the wiring isn't there, you could insert pins in the connector (like OEM) or run the wire straight through the connector and use a crimp-on bullet connector inside the door.

I haven’t failed to understand anything. I was just poking a little fun.

Perhaps you failed to pick up on that.

The mirror on the right is a JDM convex driver's mirror. It's heated but, for some reason, does not have the heated icon.
JDM Convex Driver’s Side Mirror Swap

It's pretty easy to determine if the mirror is heated by turning on the rear defrost and feeling each mirror after 5 minutes to see if it's warm.

They sell mirrors for the Land Cruiser in both heated and non-heated. I wonder if they made a change at some point and the 1958 no longer has heated mirrors.

Is it simply a matter of ordering the heated mirror part and installing in the 1958? Thanks

I don't have a 1958. I have the Base/Land Cruiser version. The OEM mirrors that came with the car were heated. I changed my mirror from a US flat mirror to a convex mirror to allow for a wider field of view. EU and JDM OEM mirrors are heated but don't have the heated symbol. These are the mirrors I order on ebay: Genuine TOYOTA Land Cruiser 250 Side Mirror RH + LH GDJ250 TRJ250 | eBay

I'm not sure how long the eBay link will work.

Once again, and it's been said on this forum, if the side mirror does not have the heated symbol, then no heat. The upper trims have the symbol but not the 1958. Now if I could just buy the heated mirror inserts, I would. However, I don't know if the wiring exists in the mirror housing.
That’s not true. There are at least some with the heating element. It appears to possibly be on the early builds. I have experienced mine defrost and defog with turning on the rear defroster. I have a 1958 delivered at the end of June 2024, one of the first in the northeast United Staes. As someone else posted, it is JDM heated glass without the icon.
