In a bit of a pickle here..... Trying to mount a rood top tent on my OE rack. But the span of the cross bars is too small to accommodate the tent. Tried to adjust but they seem to be stuck in place by pre drilled dowl dimples. Has anyone had any luck finding a way to adjust rack width and have it be structurally sound?

Seems like it would be easy enough to make a template of the two locating holes and drilling new ones

It shouldn’t be necessary. I am amazed the cross bars are fixed. Every other rack I have used both Toyota and Thule allow for crossbar adjustment. Strange design by Toyota.

The pilot holes and locating pins are to resist the bar lifting up. The locating pins in the bar clamps could be removed, beware, not sure about how solid the clamps are, especially for those that carry houses on the roof.

I’d agree. My ancient Thule square bar mounts have a rubber coated metal strap holding them to the bars. Even if they get lose they won’t come off. The factory cross bars just have a clamp.

I have drilled through holes and added the missing 5th cross bar. They are hollow but they are made of alum so no rust worries even if water gets inside.
