Started by Rio Grande Village and took the unmaintained Old River Road all the way to Castolon. Primitive camped overnight along the way.
Road isn’t overly technical, but there is loose dirt and sand washes, tons of rocks, and several short climbs on uneven surfaces. Our camp site was 3 miles off over some pretty sketchy loose rocks and uneven terrain.
My first edition did incredibly well. Never slipped or slid. Whole run was about 7 hours of driving, had three little boys, 6, 7, and 8 with me.
To give a little more detail, the whole run was about 65 miles. The condition of the road is hard to describe - lots of washes and bumps, rocky in parts, loose rocks in others, very sandy in some places. I used MTS but stayed in 4H the whole time. Average speed was probably like 8 mph - you definitely couldn’t do this route without 4 wheel drive.
Never had any problems with ground clearance. Nothing even hit the skid plate. Going slowly through obstacles, I had a ton of torque and never had any issues. The vehicle performs incredibly well offroad, this is what it’s meant for. I ran on a completely stock first edition. Wonderful experience.
