Let's kick out 517s thread about tires! :) 🙈

As many of you on this forum I'm trying to land on a set of 275/70/18 SL tires. So, I've tried to consolidate all the available on the market options into a single table. Let me know if I'm missing any options and I'll update the table. I'll also appreciate any real life reviews (rain, snow, mpg, road noise, durability, etc.)

Why a separate thread for this particular tire size/load/type combination? It seems to provide a number of benefits over the stock tires:
  • a little bit better ground clearance
  • better off-road performance
  • better looks
  • mpg is not so far away from stock tires
  • smaller-ish ground clearance hit by a spare tire
  • can reuse stock 18" wheels (33" tire on 17" wheel would be a perfect combo, but we are trying to stay on a budget here 😅. . . not exactly a benefit, more of a feature parity)
without cons coming with bigger/higher load tires:
  • more stress on breaks/suspension/drivetrain/powertrain components
  • bigger mpg hit => even less cruising range
  • doesn't fit into spare location (or if one manages to squish a bigger tire in, then it'll be a noticable ground clearance hit)
  • bigger odometer/speedometer offset

300 miles so far so good. No changes to handling. Very very slight road noise change. Very good in wet and snow conditions.

Weight and wet/ snow traction was the primary concern when selecting this tire.

I have been at 22mpg combined for the last 200 miles.

I very nearly went with the G3 for exactly this reason. It seems like the ideal size. We have 3 times as many options now as when I first compiled the spreadsheet!
