275/70/18 Fuel Economy

Is there any all terrain tire that doesn't do that at least a little? (Unless they're poking way out the rocks shouldn't be able to make it far.)
Good point. This lady at my kids school told me she switched to ko3s on her 4runner because of the pelting of the grapplers and she no longer has any issues like that. I'm thinking she must've been running the G2s and to your point what helped her is that she went narrower to relieve the poke.

I really don’t have enough off road miles yet to give you a good answer. My wheels are +45 offset which aligns the outside edge of the tread with the outside edge of the mud flaps. I think it should cover.

Honestly not sure how it changed my MPG since I only had the stock tires for 400 miles, but I’m averaging 17.5mpg with 275 E Load KO3s.

Certainly understand the benefit of the E rated. I have 275/70/18 Falken Wildpeak AT3's on my Tundra. They been a great tire, and haven't really had an impact on my mpg that much. But that's a 5.7 V8 pushing those around.

Most of my offroading is gravel roads and the odd bush trail to get me into a remote section of trout stream, so I can get away with an SL tire. But even a 1/4 - 1/2" of extra ground clearance would be nice - especially for those rutted and rooty trails I often find. But like most people on here, likely around 80% of my driving will be on pavement.
I've got the same mindset- slightly larger tire for a bit more ground clearance without a big hit to fuel efficiency. Hardest I will push this rig is to access trailheads in CO to climb 13ers and 14ers, so SL 275/70 tire should suffice.

It’s unfortunate that there isn’t a better selection of 245 or 255 with an aspect ratio of 75 or 80 on an 18” rim. Would not sacrifice fuel efficiency, add ground clearance and off road performance without downgrading to a 17” rim. Perhaps in the near future.

There are a few 275/70's in SL. Thinking I will likely go that way, or just stay with stock size in Toyo OC AT3's

I installed Icon Recon SLC (40mm offset) and Nitto Terra Grappler G3 in 275/70x18 about 2 weeks ago. I also removed the air dam trim and added FE skid plates at the same time. I haven't kept exact records but it seems like my MPG has dropped from 22-23 all-around to 19-20 or so. Like others, I didn't buy the LC for fuel mileage but do wince a bit when it gets too bad. Still, if I'd gone with an Ineos Grenadier (my 2nd choice), I might get 14 MPG on a good day.

Mods still in the works are rock rails and maybe a full-length roof rack. I'll bet they'll make the Ogre even more aerodynamic!

I just re-watched this video on them and he mentions the stipes can pick up small gravel/sand more than some other tires.

Running the Terra grappler G3’s 275/70/18’s in SL. Handles just about the same as stock. Just a tad louder. mpg seems to be close to the same

I am running Falken wild peak at4 265/70/18 SL . Mpg is 16-17 but I have never gotten mpg estimated with stock tires . I don’t how people are getting 20-22 avg . I don’t run hard the tires look very good and appear larger than stock Michelin ltx that came on it

I'm struggling which way to go with AT tires, and am looking for some input.

While I love the look of larger more aggressive tires and would like a bit of extra ground clearance, one of the reasons I'm purchasing the LC is for its fuel economy, so I'm trying to take a practical approach. As most of you know, once you jump to anything 275 or larger, you typically also jump to E rated tires, meaning significantly more weight in most circumstances.

So I'm looking for some real world input from those who've specifically gone up to 275/70/18 AT tires. What tire, what rim, and how has it affected your fuel economy?

Many thanks!
I stayed with the stock size 265/70-18 and went to BFG KO3 10 ply. Milage went from 25 mpg with stock tires to 21 mpg. FYI

Two weeks ago I had new wheels and tires added to the LC. I was averaging 20mpg prior to to new wires. I added 275/70/18's BFG Ko3's and yesterday I drove 200 miles averaging 13-14mpg's. I reset my gauge numerous times after each fill up, but not much changed. On the way home, in the snow, the wheels were awesome, I was driving about 45-50 mph and got as high as 14.5 mpg's. The first week I got the tires I was averaging 17 mpg.

Welcome to the club!

I just did a review of the Terra Grappler in 275/70/18 in SL. Getting 1 MPG less than stock 20’s. Averaging 22.7 after 500 miles. Handles close to stock.
That’s pretty interesting. I’m averaging just below that with the stock Michelins. Just had the Michelins out in the desert for a few days. They performed fine, but I’d definitely prefer something a bit more aggressive when these are done. I don’t need E rated

Wish I knew how people drive their vehicles and get 25 mpg .
I never got close from new with stock tires . I am not a rabbit driver

What did you set the pressures at?

I have been unable to get the correct answer as to what to set my 265/70-R18 tires at, some folks say what the door jam sticker says, other said to use the Toyo guide and others yet recommended a pressure calculator found online.

I’ve been running the stock Michelins at door sticker, which is 33. I’m averaging 21mpg. I may play around with pressure to see if it really matters, but I think for the driving I do, I’m probably about where it’s going to be.

For the folks getting 17-18mpg with the stock tires, I’m thinking there has to be weight added elsewhere in racks, winches etc. just shouldn’t be that big a disparity.

Had the Michelins off road in Anza Borrego this weekend. They performed fine on mostly easy-mid range trails. I certainly wouldn’t go rock climbing with them, but I don’t do that anyway. I’ll ride these until I decide which 275s to replace them with. Intrigued by the Nitto Grappler G3, given the insignificant weight difference.
