In a way, one thing I found refreshing when shopping for my 1958 ed. was the lack of available options... Given that Toyota (in the US at least), doesn't allow customers to do custom orders, In the past I've felt like I had to settle for a vehicle that was "close enough" to what I would have wanted if I could actually pick and choose...either you end up compromising on stuff you'd like to have, or end up spending money on features you don't care about.
Besides the LC, the last Toyota I purchased was a RAV4, and the number of trim levels and option packages was somewhat overwhelming.
with the Land Cruiser 1958, the only thing I really had to choose was the color. Yeah, there's a few available options, but for the most part, every available unit at any nearby dealership had the same build with the same MSRP.
EDIT: I'll also add that prior to purchasing my LC, I had already pretty much settled on my next vehicle purchase to be the LC 1958 or the 2025 4Runner...however I honestly like the more retro look of the LC better than that of the 4Runner, so was already leaning that way. I also knew that for my budget, I was going to be limited to a base model (1958) LC, but would likely be able to afford more options on the 4Runner...however seeing the prices now, and knowing I'd want iForceMAX, I still do not regret my decision.

I agree. On the Toyota site, I tried "building" a 4Runner with the same features as my LC and the price was comparable. So, if price is removed from the equation, do you choose the LC or 4Runner? For my purposes (and money), I'll take the LC every time.

Agree as well. A year ago I was going to wait for the 2025 4Runner but jumped on the opportunity to buy my 1958 six months ago and I'm glad I did. For what I was looking for the price would be about the same for a 4Runner, but the LC has a much roomier front row (5 inches taller), better interior aesthetics and I really like the classic lines of the LC. Even though I actually like the way it looks, for some reason whenever I see a 2025 4Runner, "Dodge Durango" also flashes in my mind.
Also think the Land Cruiser will hold it value better due to its nameplate and the fact that Toyota is building around ten new 4Runners for every new LC.

So if I did this right, a Platinum 4R is $65K USD. A LC premium is $70K. This is the debate I’m having in the premium end of the market. They’re largely the same/similar in price, so effectively removes price from the equation. Then which to go for? If there truly is 5” more headroom in the LC, if those stats are accurate, there’s no question I’d need the LC as I wouldn’t fit in the 4R if headroom is truly 5” shorter.
I was personally pricing the base LC (1958 Ed) vs minimal 4runner config with iForceMAX (TRD OR or Sport Premium, IIRC) , but same general conclusion.
There may be 5" less headroom in the 4runner, but for the record, there is a TON of headroom in the LC, especially without the sun/moon roof... I wouldn't assume that you wouldn't fit in a 4runner based on that metric alone without actually trying it out to see for sure
I think the LC is taller than the 4R. I don't think it is all in the headroom, though.
Agreed, I definitely need to try out the 4R as well. I do have to agree that there’s enough headroom even with the sun/moonroof in the LC. I do wonder if it’s 5” less in overall height, the body itself can’t be 5” shorter could it? That seems like a pretty dramatic difference for 2 related vehicles.
Great article, thanks for posting. Here are some highlights:
It says the LC is "2.1 inches taller and 1.1 inches shorter." It isn't clear if that includes roof rails, crossbars, roof racks, etc. But it goes on to say "the Land Cruiser offers over 1.5 inches more headroom for all passengers."
Even though it's shorter, the 4R has "0.8 inches more ground clearance."

Somehow, the LC requires premium fuel while the 4R only requires regular. I know there are multiple threads on this subject already and this lends credence to those who prefer regular.
This is instantly what I think of when I see the 2025 4Runner....
