I am just figuring this part out. It really is very confusing. For instance I like Nomad wheels and so looked into them in 17". But then realized you need to consider offset when purchasing. At stock I am understanding offset is +60 approx. From watching Icon video on tire fitting it would...
Thank you for the excellent explanation. I had it reversed, and was not sure about details regarding poke and rubbing related to offset. And I had heard the same about skinny tires being better for off-road, although it seems to defy logic.
He has done a +25 offset above (@kerner) I think. What is the offset without messing with the truck? Like neutral and OEM. Is it 0?
I am trying to understand offset and what the baseline is for our Land Cruiser. Positive is moving it outward and negative is moving inward towards middle of...
I am sorry if this has been addressed before, but are there any issues changing to 17" wheels from the 18"? I have heard something about the brakes related to this.
I like a skinnier tire and 17" seems to have better options in that regard. I like this look @kerner with the 255/80/17...
I agree with everything everyone is saying. I went from unsure of it and not understanding why the wheel was resisting lane changes, to learning about it and loving it, to recently having some odd and slightly sketchy occurrences, leading me now to not feel totally comfortable with it.
If there...
Those look great. Tire size comes up at 34.36" x 12.4" give or take depending on brand variance. So maybe this is how there is no rubbing, being under the 35 mark. Very nice looking though.
My boards fit right in back inside the LC with seats folded down. But I do have the DaKine soft racks / strap system in case I need to use the back seats. Pads can wrap on existing cross bars on the FE, and the straps are universal and can tie down on the cross bars as well. I used this in...
Thank you for your feedback on the Westcott. I am thinking of going with it too. It is not that expensive, will probably be great, and if not can always change later to new shocks if I wanted to.
Thank you! Great explanation. I think it comes down to what type of small lift I want, because regardless of tire size, I do want a 1" to 2" lift. Kind of going back to the Westcott for simplicity and cost. And I could always change it later if I want to.
Can I ask about this offset issue?
If I want to run 285/75/18 and do some kind of lift (either westcott preload, simple Toyo leveling kit for front, or perhaps Icon or Dobinsons all the way around but nothing higher than 2"), do I need to bother with offset? I do not want poke. Prefer taller...
You make a great point here about rebuilding the shocks. Something I was not aware of until recently. And I also read depending on which shock you end up with, the time to rebuild can take weeks.
Ok I did not know it had been edited. just trying to help out. Yes, I hope to fit larger on mine one day but with a lift - just trying to decide if I wait for more options to come to the market or get it done soon on something out now. Want to keep quality ride and enhance off-road capability.
That looks really good. The wheels look larger in your photos above, but you're saying they are still stock 265/70/18? If so I guess the lift just makes them appear larger. And maybe the 18 offset too.
Please let us know how the driving is on the Westcott lift. Really want to hear your...
I just got back from a drive on some curvy, tight lanes, at higher speeds (55+), and the lane trace assist was kind of sketchy on this type of driving. As others have said with curves and hash marks for lanes, the LTA seems like it is unsure of itself at times. At one point when I knew no...
Ha. Calm the anxiety but guaranteed to be off-centerπ.
By the way I used a very small drill bit to start the hole once you have it centered. Then the screws do the rest.
I literally just removed those air dams an hour ago. Looks much better. I cannot imagine removal would cause a noticeable change in MPGs. Especially around town driving. Maybe if you are making long trips at high speeds quite often you could benefit from keeping them on. Just my guess.
For as much as I write here about new suspension and tires etc, I finally made the first modification today, 1500 miles and 2 months in.
Removed the front air dams. Looks much better.
I installed mine myself. I admit was a little disturbed about drilling holes in my fender, but its very easy and living here in VA the front plate is needed, so had to get over it. As for centering, that was easy as well.
Just go for it.
One of the best things I did is turn off the nannies that tell you to "sit up straight", and "keep eyes on road".
I cannot figure out how to take off the one requiring you to keep a hand on the steering wheel, but that is probably a good prompt to be honest.
To turn those nannies off ;
go to...
10 extra gallons would be great to have, but what is involved in removing the transfer case? Certainly better than a swap with the 550 for only 2 extra gallons.
Ok this sounds crazy, but does anyone else hear these noises randomly once you have turned the engine off and if you sit in your car for a minute or so? Tonight I was on phone so stayed in the LC for about 10 minutes to wrap up the call. There seemed to be strange knocking sounds from various...
