For those who have swapped out to a 17 inch rim what tires are you running and what's the verdict?

I put Falken WildPeak AT4W LT255/80R17 (true 34" diameter) on Method 703 rims. With almost 4000 miles on the combination, I've been very pleased with their on-road performance. I'm looking forward to getting them off-road, but that's in the future. Click on the link above if you want to know how/why I picked this combination. Be warned - it's a pretty detailed explanation of my thought process!

On mine I'm running a 315/70-17 Toyo Open Country AT3. Really like them. I've had ridge grapplers, wildpeaks, KO2, baja boss, and a few M'Ts. My fav is the AT3s.

Love the photos. I think the extra sidewall fits the landcruiser well.

285/70 Wildpeak AT4. Not as comfy as stock tires but I don’t mind them.

Falken has this listed as a 33 inch diameter tire. Im considering the Toyo At3 34 10.5 17 which is a 33.6 inch tire and about 4 lbs lighter with about .5 inches more width. Im currently running stock Toyo AT3's and they are good enough, but I think I would prefer the wildpeaks. For those who have used both, is the half inch added diameter and 4 lbs lighter worth picking the Toyos?

I can confirm that the WildPeak AT4W in 255/80R17 is 33" actual diameter. The larger diameter if the Toyo will slightly defeat the weight savings (rotational inertia is a function of the radius squared...) It'd be nice if tire manufacturer's would list the rotational inertia of the tire instead of just the weight - that's the real number we'd like to know. Long story short - I wouldn't decide based on the weight difference. Here's why: The WildPeak is listed at 58.1 lbs and the Toyo at 55 lbs and 33.5" diameter. The Falken is an E load and the Toyo is a D load. A quick and dirty calculation is (58.1 lbs)(33.0 in)^2 = 63,271 lbs*in^2 vs (55.0 lbs)(33.5 in)^2 = 61,724 lbs*in^2. So, the Falken would have roughly 2.5% more rotational inertia. Another way to think about it...if the Toyo weighed 56.4#, it would have roughly the same rotational inertia as the Falken. So, I'd see the Falken as being equivalent to about 1.5 lbs more per corner.

I've not had Toyo AT3s on any vehicle I own. I can only say that I've had the WildPeaks on my LC for about 5000 miles and I'm pleased so far. Unfortunately, my LC is still a pavement princess...but her off road days keep getting closer!

That was an awesome math flex…see kids math is for the real world:)

Then on to my next query, E load tires often are so rigid that it kills the ride. Not expecting OEM ride quality, but how do the falkens ride?

The ride is pretty good - for a set of off-road focused E-load tires. ;) Based on the load tables from Falken, I've been running these at 39 psi. So, the ride is definitely firmer than with the OEM wheels that came on the 20" rims. But, I didn't buy the Falken's for a great on-road ride, I bought them for the off-road capabilities. I kept my factory wheels so I can rotate between the Falken's and the OEM wheels. When I wear down the tires on the OEM wheels, I'll probably get something that is even more road focused for when I'm using the LC as a daily. I think the big question is what is your purpose for the new boots? My answer may be very different from yours depending on what you prioritize. I decided it was worth the $ to have two sets of wheels so that I could have the best of both worlds. The performance and handling of the Falken's has been quite good in my experience. And, since road noise really annoys me, I'm very happy that the WildPeaks are pretty quiet, even when zipping down a highway at 75 mph.

Very helpful info. I think I am right where you are. I have a large Jack and it is easy for me to swap out tires when I go off-roading. Typically it is a few days or a weekend at a time. I DD the LC so there really isn’t a perfect tire. I’ll just keep the current setup and build my off-roaders.
