I just installed the RCI skid plate for transfer case. I selected 1/4” thick aluminum instead of 3/16” steel to save weight, but also think that skid plate is not most essential/ primary protections like engine and transmission.

Before I order that plate, many people say it probably doesn’t fit/work with OEM First Edition transmission plate. As usually, I believe I can “adjust / modify” it if it true.

Today, after I did install it successfully with “1 mod” ;) (yes mod again!). Below is my procedure:
1/ take off the 2 OEM skid plates of engine and transmission
2/ follow the RCI instruction, “temporary” install the Transfer case skid plate: use all nuts/bolts/spacers as provided. You MUST use ALL
3/“ temporary” put the OEM transmission skid plate back. I am only able to have 3 bolts hold it up. Now, since it overlaps on top of RCI transfer case plate…I mark the hole/area where the 4th bolt of transmission plate to go through
4/ remove OEM transmission plate
5/ remove the RCI transfer case plate. Drill 1/2” dia hole at where I mark earlier
5/ Finally, put everything back in order:
RCI transfer case plate, transmission plate and engine plate.
Note: need a 1/4” spacer for the transmission plate bolt (driver side), because 1/4” RCI skid plate creating that 1/4” gap

Kinda long and detail what I just did.
To make everyone life “moving” easier, I did measure the location of the hole I drilled on RCI transfer case plate.
Now, you just (pay me hahaha kidding or just thanks me hahah preferred)
save ton of time and drill where it is (shown on my attached photos)

That's extremely useful! I got some questions, but I've found some answers myself:

But I have couple more Qs 😅

  • Site/instructions are talking about cross member, but you didn't mention it and it doesn't appear on your photos. So, is it real?
  • On one side the skid is bolted to the frame. Will it be friends with stock rock rails?

Yeah why crossmember ?! It made me confusing at the time to order…but in their instruction: never mention about it! Weird

Answer: NO NEED! It bolted directly to LC frame cross member and side member.

YES. It works well with OEM rock rail. Nothing conflicted: rock rails bolted to the side of side frame, skid plate bolted under the side frame

Now…waiting for RCI:
1/ fuel tank skid plate (aluminum)
2/ lower control arm skid plate (aluminum)
3/ rear differential: probably OEM skid plate (steel 7.1 lbs). Still concern about clearance reduced! (3/4” to 1”)…not pull trigger yet
Asked members here who got those on hand to measure how thick the rubber between diff and skid plate…but NO ANSWER from them!
