I would prefer to lock my keys in the car and unlock with the Toyota app, but the app will not let me lock it if the keys are in it. Does anyone have a hack for getting around this?

I really like the convenience of just leaving my keys in the car and taking my phone with me

This is a 1958

But maaaan I wouldn't trust the Toyota app, nope nope nope
Yeah, there have already been posts here about folks having issue with the digital key available on the higher trims, particularly in areas with no cell coverage available...

OP, that's definitely not a situation you'd want, to be stranded and/or locked out of your LC somewhere because there's no signal for either your phone or the vehicle's receiver, or if Toyota's services are experiencing any kind of general issues. Plus, I imagine that having the key fob left in the vehicle leaves it much more open to theft.

I can appreciate the desire to not have to carry the fob around, but I wouldn't trying what you're suggesting.

Understood. We have a Tesla and I LOVE not carrying a key other. Than emergency card. That being said, it works on Bluetooth and Cellular

I just love the external entry keypads that have been around since the late 70's. To my knowledge Toyota currently offers no such beast or I would add it in a heartbeat. Maybe there is an aftermarket entry keypad option?

Same with owning a Tesla, such a good app. I don't know why Toyota has to use cellular, probably to keep that subscription money coming in. I think Ford has the external keypad thing on lockdown, never seen it anywhere else

Would this be a case where the card key would be useful?

Or take the physical key out of the keyfob and leave the keyfob in the truck? Though I don't remember how the alarm, etc. works when unlocking in the case.

You could purchase a credit card key for a 2024 Tacoma and have it added to the LC. I use mine on the daily. The batteries don't last a long time so if you go that route be sure and get the CC emergency physical key as well. I had the battery die just last week.

I was able to lock my fob in my 22 Bronco, I had a center console safe so I could lock it in there. I did learn, however, even with the fob locked in the center console safe, I could start and drive the Bronco. Trusting signal availability aside, if I were to lock my fob inside my LC and use the app to unlock the door, I would consider putting the fob in a Farady pouch in the event someone broke into it, they couldn't also drive it away.

GM has it. I had it on a 2018 Canyon Denali

i also like to lock the car with the engine and AC running in the heat. Don't shame me here... I've done it to keep the dog comfortable when I run into a store. Steps:
-I take the key out of the fob,
-leave the fob in the car
-lower the driver window,
-reach through the open window (from outside)and lock the vehicle
-reach through the window and raise it

The engine and AC continue to run (as long as I have gas!). When I return, I have to unlock with the physical key.

I'm not familiar. I'll check that out. I hope that works on a 1958

Too much work there. Leave the vehicle running, leave the fob in the car, close the door, and lock it with the physical key.

Good point! Not sure why I do it the way I do, but I will change. Since I dislike the idea of carrying a key, I should just get an extra key and lock it in a combination hitch receiver cover for use as needed since I typically only carry a money clip.

Faraday case. I use this one daily in a slightly different way. I park and go for runs around my area trails. I leave this little bag folded up in the little trough of the door handle, then grab it when I'm headed out for a run. I lock the car with the fob, slip it inside the bag and hide it up on top of the coil spring behind the tire (making sure no one it looking). It works great for my needs.

Sad to report I think the keypad, which they own the patent for, has been completely discontinued on all models.

I had heard the same thing. Keep Your Daydream, youtube channel, has a video on the keypad that might have some insight. I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.
