JDM Convex Driver’s Side Mirror Swap

I was thinking about stocking the JDM blue ones. Good comparison photo. 👍

Pulling mirrors on a new vehicle is always fun. Never know what is going to happen. I usually push it all the way over and give it a jolt and pray it breaks free.

Did you receive mirrors for both sides? Is the passenger side a vertical view like the driver side one, or a horizontal convex view?

Do you have a link to the mirror? I googled Jpm mirror and got jdmaccesories and did not see it.

Just got mine and installed, don't have pictures at the moment, wasn't to bad to change, few minutes on each side. Thanks CorpSkiBum Bweare for the write up and web site, pretty quick getting them from Japan.

Most of my previous cars have been Euro models, and I’ve always swapped out the mirrors for aspherical ones. I like quickly glancing at my driver’s mirror and confidently merging across multiple lanes when getting on the highway.

In the U.S., driver’s side mirrors must be flat by law, meaning convex or aspherical mirrors are not allowed on the driver’s side. In contrast, European models typically use aspheric on the driver’s side and convex on the passenger side. Japan appears to use convex mirrors on both sides.

I ordered a set of JDM mirrors from eBay. Unfortunately, the OEM part number isn’t printed on the US or JDM mirrors, so I don’t have the official JDM part number. However, the US driver’s mirror part number is 87961-6A570.

No Heated Mirror Symbol – The JDM mirrors don’t have the heated mirror symbol yet are heated. I checked with a forum member in the UK, and their heated mirrors also lack the symbol, so this seems to be a Toyota design choice outside of North America.

After swapping to the JDM convex mirror, I noticed that the most significant change is in the vertical field of view (which is kind of useless) rather than horizontal due to the shape of the Land Cruiser 250 mirrors.

are these the blue ones?

I didn't buy the blue ones. From pictures, they look identical. The only difference appears to be the coating. Looks to be convex with the connection for the mirror heating and blind spot monitor. Part number for the blue mirrors: 08169-60010

Great, thanks. Unfortunately that ebay seller for the non-blue mirrors is out of stock, and I can't find them anywhere else.

For someone who's done the swap, could you walk through the steps? (and anything in particular to avoid breakage/damage of tabs, etc) Thanks in advance 🙏

Uhhh... you take a deep breath and just pull the mirror away from the housing. There isn't really a science to it.

I pulled mine and the JDM mirrors popped right back on. Both plugs are the same.

Does this mean manufacturers can't include convex but they can be changed to convex afterwards, or that convex driver's side mirrors are illegal in general?

Here’s the procedure for mirror removal, which someone else posted before.

I did the JDM mirror swap over the weekend. Fairly nerve-racking but was successful. I put some painters tape over the old mirror on the off chance that it helped reduce the chance of cracking. Beyond that, I didn’t find a pry tool much use so just pulled on the corner with the diagonal cutaway as it is closest to the four clips that hold the mirror to the main white circle.

You can sort of see in with a flashlight and other people have posted pictures that show these clips in the back of the mirror. The harder part was pushing the new mirror clips back on to the white plastic piece attached to the mirror motor. I used a microfiber towel to avoid scratches while pushing and eventually had to hope that all four clips had snapped into place - you can sort of tell from looking in.

I’m still getting use to the curved mirror but the field of view is definitely wider. Shipping from Japan was very quick - [NEW] JDM Toyota Land Cruiser 250 J250W Rain Clearing Blue Mirror Genu.

Hello, does anyone know the part number for the non blue mirrors? I couldn't find them on ebay, i only find the blue mirrors.

Wonder if this would kinda eliminate the need for blind spot mirrors.

I honestly can’t find a good set of mirrors for these oddly shaped sides. I also don’t want to cover up the land notification thing.

It’s part of the NHTSA regulations that the driver’s side (left) mirror must be flat. So technically, swapping to a convex JDM mirror on the driver’s side isn’t legal in the U.S.

That said, it’s extremely unlikely anyone would ever notice or care.
Does FMVSS No 111 apply to modifications performed by the customer, or just the manufacturers?

For example, in AZ, it’s legal to run without side view mirrors as long as the rear view mirror has a clear view. Thus, it wouldn’t matter to have the driver’s side mirror be convex, since AZ law enforcement doesn’t care.

Edit: not a lawyer. FMVSS only applies to manufacturers
