I love tinkering around in my garage and always try to streamline and improve my garage organization. I have some steel cabinets from NewAge and heavy-duty shelving for storage containers, but floor space is precious, so I'm thinking about going with overhead storage. This would allow me to organize everything neatly into storage containers, free up floor space, and retain easy access to the containers. I have 10' 6" ceilings, so I have plenty of room around the edges of the garage to bolt up overhead storage racks while still being able to have toolboxes and workbenches below. Does anyone have any experience with overhead storage racks in their garage? Are there any pros or cons that I should consider before purchasing?

Did this in my last house which lacked storage space other than in the garage, which thankfully was pretty large. No cons that I could think of. Similar setup but wall mounted worked great for me!

I love the overhead garage storage. I bought 2 sets from Northern Tool before Christmas for $79 each. They are so easy to adjust the height. It's easier with a 2nd person to install them. I marked the studs with painter tape and it was easy to drill and bolt doing that.

I was doing some measuring this morning and I think I’m going to do at least 3x8 and 3x6 overhead rack. If those go well then I think I have enough room to squeeze in one more 3x8 rack.

My overhead racks have arrived, and I've started measuring the ceiling for mounting location. In my mind, I was going to connect multiple overhead racks to form one nice seamless rack across my back wall. After going through the installation instructions, I realized that the weight limit on these racks is calculated from each hanging support having its own bracket mounted along or between two studs. If I were to chain these racks together, one mounting bracket would have to support two drop supports, doubling the load of a single mounting bracket. So, when measuring for these overhead racks, you will need to plan on having a gap between each rack system that accounts for an additional mounting bracket to keep the optimal load limits.

I also quickly realized that the installation would be MUCH easier if I had a laser level. So, I went down the laser level rabbit hole last night, and I'm leaning toward getting a Huepar self-leveling laser level from Amazon. I would love to be able to justify a Milwaukee or DeWalt laser level, but the starting price of those is at least $369, and that doesn't come with a battery, tripod, or carrying case. The Huepar laser levels have good reviews, and the price is hard to beat for everything you get.
